ArchivesGeekFest
Fredericton, New Brunswick (June 11, 2008)
A barcamp for Archivists. A BarCamp is an ad-hoc gathering born from the desire for people to share and learn in an open environment. They are designed to be fast-paced, intensive, fun events with discussions, demos and interaction from participants.
ArchivesGeekFest will be a laid-back event designed for archivists interested in IT and digital culture to hang out, exchange ideas and have some geeky fun. There is no minimum IT experience requirement, alpha-geeks and wannabe-geeks are equally welcome. The only requirement is that you are expected to participate in some manner, whether that is doing a brief presentation, blogging about the event, facilitating a brainstorming group, etc..

Suggested Activities
- Google intros
- Google one of the other participants and introduce them to the group.
- Review/revise agenda
- Battledecks/PowerPoint Kareoke
- what is Battledecks/Powerpoint Kareoke? Someone prepares a PowerPoint deck of random or related slides. No more than 10. Usually from some obscure, pre-existing presentation. Another person who has never seen the presentation before, pretends its theirs and 'sells it' to the audience. The hilarity ensues as the presenter tries to keep some coherent message to the whole thing without knowing what slide will pop-up next. Two presentations/presenters. Audience votes for winner. Winner gets lame prize (e.g. stuffed toy unicorn).
- a great example from DemoCampVancouver03: http://www.video.ca/video.php?id=1366004857
- Archives & Computing pop quiz
- Someone prepares a multi-choice quiz related to Archives & Computing (e.g. What does MARC21 stand for? How many columns in a Hollerith punch-card? How many descriptions are there on the Archives Canada portal? What was the first archival institution in Canada with a computer? with a website?). All participants take quiz. Highest score gets a lame prize.
- Archives & IT Lightning Talks
- short 10-15 min presentations
- PowerPoint, demos and/or just a steady stream of chatter
- audience feedback/questions during presentation
- possible topics: "Look, my IT rules!", "Help!, my IT sucks!", digitization projects, putting databases online, web exhibits, archives information system upgrades, electronic records preservation, e-records systems RFPs, blogging, why GoogleBooks is evil or good, what I learned at conference/course xyz, etc.
- please propose more... (nothing formal expected, feel free to use something directly from work, a good way to get feedback on existing, in-progress projects)
- Hackfest/Group Brainstorm Projects - break up into groups, report back at end of afternoon
- eg, fun: functional requirements for the world's worst Archives IT system/website (hint: good way to figure out what the ideal system is by flipping it around)
- eg, geekie: add a GoogleMap mashup to your online archival descriptions
- eg, serious: let's solve this pesky little appraisal of electronic records problem, once and for all.
- please propose more (nothing formal expected, feel free to use something from work, a good way to get feedback and actual work done on existing, in-progress projects)
DEBRIEF
- the inaugural ArchivesGeekFest was a great success, exceeding the expectations of most participants. At the end of the day it was decided that this event should be repeated next year.
- highlights were the hilarious Powerpoint kareoke expertly delivered by Jim Suderman and John Roberts who each have potential careers as stand-up comics should this whole archive thing not work out
- the other highlight was the opportunity to speak freely and frankly about Archives IT projects, what works, what doesn't, etc. with a group of like-minded peers. The conversation moved freely during and after presentations and jumped around from online finding aids to corporate ERDMS to computer installation art.
- Jeremy Heil has agreed to handle coordination of next years event at the ACA2009 in Calgary
- the participants agreed that holding it the day before the conference is the best time
- the Google intros were fun but a little time-consuming. We should probably stick to a regular round of intros at next year's event
- the ACA office will handle registration for ArchivesGeekFest again as part of the ACA2009 registration, we do need to ask for them to include an opt-in checkbox on the registration form so that we have access to the email of all participants prior to the event to make it easier to coordinate, send reminders, etc.
