BarCamb 1: the first Barcamp in Cambridge, UK.

Friday 24th August, 2007

UPDATE: Barcamb 2 is coming! Friday 1st August, 2008

The very first Barcamp in Cambridge is taking place on August 24th. All are invited to join us at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute for a day of discussions, demos, and interaction focused on science and technology.

The Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute is one of the leading genomics centres in the world, dedicated to analysing and understanding genomes. Through large-scale analysis - and focused research and collaborations - the Sanger Institute's programmes underpin biological and medical research worldwide.

The Wellcome Trust Genome Campus houses the Sanger Institute and the European Bioinformatics Institute. It is the home of many diverse genomic and informatics projects, including large scale sequencing, Ensembl, UniProt and human genomic analysis.

50 people have signed up to attend the inaugural Barcamp! We're now full to capacity and so registration is closed, but feel free to take a look at our Upcoming page anyway. For all those who have signed up: we're very much looking forward to meeting you - feel free to add the title of your proposed session here.

Arriving on Friday

BarCamp Cambridge is still good to go for Friday: we very much look forward to welcoming you all to the Sanger Institute.

On arrival, you'll need to check in with security. They are located in the visitor's building on the left as you arrive at the Genome Campus, Hinxton. Once on campus, we'll meet for coffee and to arrange the talks for the day at 9.30am in the Cairns Pavillion. Maps of the campus are available from security - but we'll also have some signs up directing you to the right place.

After coffee, we'll get started with some talks which will be held in the Sulston Laboratories and the Morgan Building of the Sanger Institute. Again, our available rooms will be well signposted.

There is ample parking on campus: please use car park A.

Details about getting here are available on the Sanger web site.

Confirming

Anyone who has not done so, if you could send me you full name I'll make sure that security are expecting you. You can contact me on: matt.wood at sanger.ac.uk.

Scope

The venue of the first Barcamp in Cambridge will help provide focus for the meeting. Attendees are invited to talk, demonstrate and discuss topics at the interface between science and technology. This encompasses, but is not limited to areas such as computer science, laboratory science and information management, informatics, open source in science, computational chemistry, mathematical biology and the web.

Spotlight on Science

The Sanger Institute's communication and public engagement team are looking to make Barcamb a 'spotlight on science' event. As such, they will be roving around the conference conducting a few interviews and capturing the event in pictures. This is now available on: http://www.yourgenome.org/feature/barcamb/ . The Cambridge Evening News have also expressed an interest in the event, and will be sending along a photographer.

Equipment

Data projectors, white boards and flip pads are available in both rooms.

Hardware/Software Hacking: Joining the Real and the Virtual

Home Awareness shameless plug :) there's hardly any info on www.alertme.com as yet so email Laura at alertme.com or post in my unofficial tangler room at http://www.tangler.com/group/11968/

mbed - Rapid Prototyping with Microcontrollers

http://mbed.co.uk

For anyone that is interested in my stuff with microcontrollers, i've got a (currently private) google group at http://groups.google.com/group/mbed so just request approval to join and mention barcamb and you can keep tabs or even get involved and trial it ;) Or you can always just email me: simon.ford@mookstar.co.uk

SuperHappyDevClub

http://superhappydevclub.org

For any of you that like barcamp-style things, but also "doing" stuff, i'm starting to do an occasional "club" for people wanting to get together to hack on their pet hardware/software/web project around others. Should usually involve an afternoon of beer, bbq, chatting and creating cool stuff. See more at http://superhappydevclub.org. For any eager beavers I've got a couple of people coming over tomorrow (Sat 24th Aug) so email if you want to join us (simon.ford@mookstar.co.uk), else join the SHDC google group for notification of the next one which will be sometime early october. Bye!

Ndiyo

http://ndiyo.org

You can read more about Ndiyo on our site. There's a blog and a mailing list there. The core technology used in the Ndiyo project was created by the first company that grew out of it - DisplayLink. Their chips can be found in a variety of devices, such as the Samsung 940UX monitors we were showing. We didn't talk much about our latest attempt to commercialise some of our work, which you can find at Cambridge Visual Networks.

    • Social Bookmarking For Science

I've uploaded the slides to slideshare, and you can see the raw notes that I took during some of the talks here. I've also tagged a few pictures on flickr with barcamb. You can see many of the examples that I was talking about at ConnoteaTools.

I too have uploaded the slides to slideshare, as well as the little plug for the two communities I'm involved in: MacResearch.org and Scicomp@Cam.

Don't forget to check out Ian's excellent write up of the meeting on Nature's Nascent blog.
