Recap and Discussions

  • What we covered - please add your comments here.
  • We had about 30 people show up with a heavy contingency from Yahoo! Introductions from around the table showed a diverse gathering of tech-heads and a biology post-doc. Dinner came and everyone was involved in multiple discussions. Towards the end, Adam Bain, EVP from Fox started a discussion about innovation and integrating new companies into a larger one.

Innovation ideas included:

  • Get a champion
  • Hire people with passion
  • Set time aside for developers to geek out
  • Have CEO/upper mgmt and developers talk to each other
  • Keep new groups sheltered from management overhead – let them do what you hired the to do
  • Rapid development cycles – not 6 months, 1 month!
  • Keep a culture of innovation
  • Have a sabbatical camp or your own corporate unconference
  • Have ideas be actionable
  • Compare with the University Grant system, where working groups take up specific areas of expertise, research and present findings.
  • Agile prototyping: "don't tell me about your idea. show me a working prototype". Let the prototype be the product specification.
