Geek Dinner Los Angeles

  • June 13th, 7:30 drinks, 8:30 dinner
  • Meet for drinks around 7:30-8ish at The Brig (1515 Abbot Kinney Blvd at Palms)
  • Dinner at 8:30: Mao's Kitchen in Venice
  • Speaker: No formal speaker. Let's just meet and eat and see what we talk about.

Recap

  • Please add your notes here both good and constructive
  • About 20 people showed up, many at the Brig for a pre-Mao drink where we took over the bar. Kareem met up with us at Maos with some beers and we proceeded to take up the entire back wall. We snacked on deep fried wonton skins and rousting conversation until our food came. I really enjoyed the people I talked with. Some good thoughts on B.la vs Laist and tracking conversations across the web, but I wanted to corner Huy to talk about his barcamp TV idea... alas, he was sitting at the end of the table. - Heathervescent
  • Some great conversation between Tom, Zach G, Ranjit, Tony Adam, and myself about Google refusing to police direct navigation sites & linkfarms because of strong financial disincentives - Kareem
  • On the conversation about MySpace and Facebook, and the skepticism about their valuations, we were talking about how popular the sites were and different impressions of the stats on their popularity were shared. I looked it up: My Space has 51mm unique visitors (#7 in the US) and 29.4bn page views (#2 in the US). Facebook has 14mm unique visitors (#49 in the US) and 6.5bn page views (#7 in the US). - Ranjit

Feedback and next dinner

  • I thought this format without a formal speaker worked really well. Please let me know what you thought, because I'm planning to keep this style.
  • Tentative date for July is Tuesday the 18th. Location: somewhere midtown/Hollywood
  • Future west side location suggested: Buca di Beppo
  • Please add your name to the RSVP list if you attended.

*Cutting off RSVP list everyone. See ya there.

Requests, Admin, etc

  • I'd like to suggest Mao's Kitchen in Venice, but I'm not sure how busy they get on a random Tuesday night. Does anyone care enough to call and find out? [Jason Cosper] - Done. Thanks Jason.
  • Do you have any special request? Add it here.
