You are receiving this because your have signed up [http://www.benmetcalfe.com/wiki/BarCampLondon] to attend the BarCampLondon event on Sep2-3rd. If this is not the case, please let us know immediately by replying to this email

Hello BarCamper!

It's now little more than a week until the UK's first BarCamp opens its doors to the London developer, design and Internet community.

Both Ian Forester and myself, Ben Metcalfe, would like to congratulate you for making it onto the attendee's list. This is a hot ticket event – over-subscribed almost 2:1. In fact on that note can I ask you to let us know ASAP if you can no longer make the event, so that we can offer your place to someone on the waiting list plz?

The Time, The Place

Yahoo! UK are kindly donating their offices for the event, which are located at:

Yahoo! UK Ltd

125 Shaftesbury Avenue

London

WC2H 8AD

(map)

We have just completed the event schedule (see below) but in a nutshell we would ask all attendees to arrive for the event between 10:00am and 10:30am so that you can register and have a chance to meet other people before we 'officially' begin with the welcome session at 11:00am. Please do try to make it on time as the 'welcome session' contains all the 'housekeeping' announcements along with an opportunity for everyone to (briefly) introduce themselves.

How the BarCamp will work

Everyone is expected to present a 30 min slot. And we mean everyone – no tourists here please! Those not wanting to participate will be asked to leave.

You can talk about whatever you like, in any format you want – slide presentation, video, spontaneous (if you can do it!) or even something avant-garde! We will provide you with a computer projector, so bring anything else you need with you to make it happen.

We realise that not everyone finds presenting as easy as others so you're also welcome to hold a discussion instead (Decide on an issue you find interesting, prepare some introductory slides outlining your views/concerns/ideas and take it from there!).

We just ask you to do something! Check out http://barcamp.org/TheRulesOfBarCamp for more information

The two days are broken up into periods lasting 3 hours. Each period consists of 6 x 30 minute slots. There are 5 rooms and thus 5 talks occur in each slot – plenty of choice to find something of interest we hope.

We've had a few non-techie attendees email us to confirm this isn't going to be an uber l33t g33k fest – don't worry, it's not. A quick scan through the attendee list shows we have attendees with backgrounds in design, usability, marketing/pr, digital agency work and venture capital. There's a real mix, and with 5 sessions happening at any one time.

All that we ask is no heavy sales pitches about you commercial products please. Highlighting products/services etc in the context of something wider is fine. In other words you can mention you're company's RSS reader in your presentation about syndication techniques for blogs, but don't spend the entire 30 minutes labouring on about it please!

What you need to bring

I'm please to announce that we have managed to secure sponsorship for all food, drink and meals during the BarCamp! A big thank you to eBay (Sat lunch), Yahoo! (Sat dinner), bbc.co.uk (Sun breakfast), backstage.bbc.co.uk (Sun lunch) and TechCrunchUK (snacks + drinks throughout the weekend) for sorting us out! So there's no need to bring food!

However we would recommend attendees bring the following:

  • Laptop - don't forget your charger. And your funny video-port dongle if you have an Apple laptop that needs one.
  • Network cable – everyone will have access to Yahoo!'s fat pipe during the event, but sadly wifi coverage will NOT be available. We have plenty of routers and switches, so please just bring your own network cable if you can. We will also provide some spares but maybe not enough for everyone.
  • Sleeping bag – if you are camping over. It's not mandatory but it adds to the spirit of the event! Don't forget your toothbrush, etc!
  • An open mind, prepared to listen to others and challenge constructively and respectively where appropriate. So no "bullshit" remarks from me then, I promise!.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Neither Yahoo! or the organisers of BarCampLondon can take any responsibility for any items lost, stolen or damaged at the event. However, only those on the attendee list or invited by Yahoo! will be admitted onto the premises during the weekend and as such we do not believe the risk to be high. Nevertheless we would advise you to take reasonable precautions such as not leaving your laptop unattended, etc.

Volunteers

We still need some volunteers to meet + greet attendees, give them a name badge etc. If you are able to do this and can arrive at 9am on Saturday please let us know! We have prizes/gifts for volunteers!

Well, that's it - but do email us if you have any unanswered questions. We look forward to seeing you on Saturday 2nd September for registration 10am - 10:30am.

Thanks

Ben and Ian
