BarCampNOLA2009

BarCampNola Snowball

Last year Chris Schultz brought BarCamp to New Orleans by organizing BarCampNola2008.

By all accounts, the event was a success.  We all had a great time, and all year we've been hearing the same questions:

     "When's the next BarCamp?"

"When are we getting the techies together again?"

Well, the answer is:  July 18th, 2009!

And YOU are invited.

What is BarCamp?

BarCamp is an ad-hoc gathering born from the desire for people to share and learn in an open environment. It is an intense event with discussions, demos, and interaction from attendees.

It is an open event where each attendee is encouraged to participate and present. All content comes from the attendees and each workshop or presentation is scheduled on the day of the event, differentiating it from 'regular' conferences. BarCamp is an 'un-conference'. It is a meeting of the nerds/geeks who exchange information about what they are passionate about and share it with their peers. While it is encouraged to be somewhat technology oriented, all themes are welcome.

If you are new to BarCamp, check out the BarCamp basics links in the sidebar on the right, or see: What is What is BarCamp? What to expect at a BarCamp? The Rules of BarCamp

Event details

When

July 17th, 2009 - Evening: Ice breaker at 8pm (details below)

July 18th, 2009 - Day 1: The Main Event: discussions, demos, and presentations

July 18th, 2009 - Evening: Party at Republic (details below)

July 19th, 2009 - Day 2: All day workshop (details below)

Where

BarCampNola will be held this year at the Launch Pad!

LaunchPad The Launch Pad is a place for small businesses and entrepreneurs to share a workspace. By doing this they decrease the individual costs of maintaining an office space and benefit from the business development and consulting opportunities that occur within the community.

embrace your potential and grow

Parking

It has come to our attention that parking around LaunchPad on Saturday might be a bit difficult due to the Farmers Market going on around the corner.

Option 1: get there early, or just get lucky and find some free off-street parking

Option 2: $10 a day parking in the lot at the corner of Magazine and Capdeville

Option 3: $6 a day parking in the lot at the corner of Magazine and St. Joseph

Schedule

Day 1

  • 10am, breakfast and introductions
  • 1st round of presentations
  • Lunch
  • 2nd round of presentations

Day 2 WorkShop

Last year BarCampNola's goal was "Let's get a bunch of Gulf Coast geeks together and build something for someone who needs our help."

This year, well... that's a good goal, let's stick with that!

This year BarCampNola has a specific project we can all get together and focus our energies on. We have reached out to the Recovery School District and hope to build a small site for the volunteer and donation coordinators.

As the Recovery School District works to rebuild an entire school system while simultaneously reinventing the way we educate our urban youth, so many unique and exciting things are occurring. In addition, we are living in a culture that is becoming more and more dependent on the internet for information on their own communities and it is crucial for the public schools of New Orleans to be tapped into this network. However, there is currently no internet outlet that keeps the community connected to the schools and all of the changes that are taking place within them. We are looking to create a website that personalizes the schools and better informs the community of the work being done in them. We would like to create a site with a brief history of the Recovery School District, and who is involved in the different projects in the schools. In addition, we could create an area on the site dedicated to the different schools, with brief histories and pictures of each. Perhaps a “what’s going on section” filled with pictures and details of all the different projects and events being done in the school ranging from KaBOOM! Playground builds to mini projects in the schools such as the installation of homemade bird houses. We would also like to address some of the needs of schools, enabling people to better comprehend the level the schools are currently at and where there is a need for improvement. This could include a section informing people of how they can play a role in the rebuilding of the schools, information on how to volunteer, where and what to donate and also a section for corporate sponsors to learn about what kinds of large scale projects they can become involved in. This project could create a valuable resource to update the community on all the work taking place within the New Orleans public schools.

With a good group of talented BarCampers, we could get a good start on this project in the one day Sunday workshop. Depending on who is there we could possibly set up a small CMS, perhaps get a little geocoding for the location of the schools, perhaps some social interaction where people who have volunteered can write about the experience. A calendar of events, a cool AJAxy picture gallery, and so on...

It's a challenge. Let's see if we can #bangitout!

The Evenings

Okay seriously, what's an event in New Orleans without a litte evening entertainment?!

Luckily, we have a few places that reached out to support the tech-commnity, even if we are geeks.

Ice Breaker at Loa, Friday Evening, July 17th

Before Day 1 of the event, join us at Loa to meet and greet your fellow campers.

Discuss possible presentation ideas, finally meet those twitter 'friends' face to face, or just have a cool drink.

Loa can be found in the lobby of the International House Hotel at 221 Camp Street

See you there.

Free Entrance to Republic, Saturday Evening July 18th

After a long day of hard-core geeking out, shake it off at Republic!

They are waiving the cover for all BarCampNola attendees and reserving a section with cocktail service, just don't forget to tip your waitress!

Republic can be found at 828 S Peters St

To enter you will need to be on the offical BarCampNola list available to sign Day 1 of the event.

Entry must be before 11pm.

DressCode: casual evening club, no shorts, no flip flops (sorry Kyle), no baseball caps. Tennis shoes.. achem... tolerated.

Oh, and remember, you gotta wake up for Day 2!

Register

Participants (aka Campers)

If you are thinking about attending, please RSVP by adding your name, contact info, and possible presentation topic below.

Although presenting at BarCamp is not required, it is encouraged. It's all about sharing your ideas and passions with the group.

You don't have to be an expert on the topic, just be ready to start a discussion!

Actual presentation times and topics will be decided on the morning of the event, but if you know what the topic of your presentation might be, go ahead and let us know.  This will help us prepare for the event.

  • d) "Terms all developers (and Recruiters) should know before the interview" (Similar to talk (a) but more focused on definitions and in-depth discussion per each one.)  What should a developer know- MVC, SVN, IDE, unit testing, design patterns, etc.

Our Logos

At the last Net2No,  there was quite a heated discussion about which logo was a better fit for this year's BarCamp.

Andrew Larimer was kind enough to design our two logo choices this year, both of which include the token BarCamp flame and a symbol of our city. Although we have the snowball at the top of the main page, we still have some time before we have to commit to printing.

Which one do YOU prefer?

Sound off here!

And for the record, Andrew says he has no problem with "bitter, callous dissection and excrement flinging at the expense of my artistry."
