What is a BarCamp?

A BarCamp is an ad-hoc gathering born from the desire for people to share and learn in an open environment. It is an intense event with discussions, demos, and interaction from participants. Here is a quote from the wikipedia description:

'BarCamp is an international network of unconferences — open, participatory workshop-events, whose content is provided by participants — focusing on early-stage web applications, and related open source technologies and social protocols.'

BarCampSydney is a gathering of creative tech brains for learning, sharing and collaboration.

For the Sydney BarCamp we're making topics open to those beyond technology to include entertainment, art, marketing, other technologies and content such as podcasts and so on. See other camps such as ArtCamp, MarCamp and BlogCamp.

Signup and RSVP

Attendance is free. Please Register for our April 2008 event here so we can make sure there's enough space. Everyone is encouraged to present, so when you RSVP, include what you might like to talk about.

Whilst on the Signup page please indicate in the form below the main sign up form if you can spare a Couch for a BarCamp attendee coming in from out of town. We have a few booked in from Canberra and Wollongong already...

Also, this year, being a 2 day event we are holding a special event on Sunday afternoon. We are holding a New Technology Soapbox where you get to demonstrate your latest software / project / beta or what ever you wish, as long as it's tech related. You get 5-10 mins to present your product to the BarCamp attendees. Attendees can ask questions or you can ask questions of the BarCamp crowd - free advice from experts in Marketing, to Recruitment to Coding to Entrepreneurship. Just fill in the form on the sign up page to let us know if you are interested in presenting at the Soapbox. We will provide the Projector, you just bring the laptop and presentation details.

Session Structure

Whatever structure the session needs to be in is the right structure. However, here are some ideas:

  • Panel
  • Presentation
  • Goldfish Bowl
  • Soap box - Just stand on a box and spout your wisdom.
  • Half-Geeked - Half-Baked, but tech focused.
  • Demo new stuff
  • Debates
  • Anything goes...
In terms of time, slots will be around 5-10 minutes of talking and 10-15 minutes of Q&A. If the group wants more time, it's okay to self-organise and reshuffle the schedule or find another location to continue the discussion.
