How do you set long term goals?

Set a goal to have a goal.

"Check Whoosh"

Peter:

Shane and Julie taught us to make dream lists of everything you ever want to have, do or be. The list is things that are not just what you could do or even want to do, but have ever thought would be cool to do.

Robyn:

What would be my perfect day?

  • Who do i interact with?
  • What would you want to do?
  • What themes do you continue to be interested in?

Peter:

How do you think of your perfect day in 5, 10 , 30 years?

Robyn:

Perhaps an ideal is to let your aspirations inform your everyday instead of focusing on the future.

Lindsey:

Need to manage your focus so as not devote everything to one goal at the expense of all others.

Robyn:

Sometimes you need to think of alternative ways of attaining a goal.

Emily:

Rather than trying to bite the whole goal and giving up, need to be less pragmatic and more optimistic.

John:

What's the biggest impediment?

Robyn:

Habits and those that you love you.

Peter:

How do you integrate your life goals into your business?

Brandon:

How many people have freelancing as one of their goals? (many raised hands)

I didn't have it as a goal originally, but fell into it.

Cheryl:

I work too hard and not smart enough.

Peter:

I find that you need to consider your value and to pick clients and a working situation.

Brandon:

How do you plan for raising your rate?

Robyn:

You don't. you just do it. Some people leave and some don't. fine. there it is. you are working less for the same money.

You can't let the lizard in the back of your head keep you from change. My husband would say "I always support you but..."

Iris:

Over value yourself. If you work for $15/hr, then that's all you ever get.

Peter, how do you decide to just go for the big fish if you know that you might not get them, you might fail?

Peter:

Fine line between stupidity and bravery. i bought a house and quit my job at the highest point in the real estate market. That was ok though because i had a 6 month buffer.

Have a 6 months savings.

Reid:

I have to make my current clients happy, and i need to find new ones... how do i grow when i struggle to keep up?

Everyone:

Fire some clients.

Brandon:

I had to stop working with some clients and it hurt because i was invested in them.

Robyn:

How do you build a sculpting business?

John:

I never planned it. I always have to check my motive. I have to eliminate the perceptions in my life that are not motivated rationally.

I have to feel ok about who i am and not need your approval.

Margaret:

Create Clearings. You need to let go of clients to create room for more opportunity.

Lindsey:

Feel like that is the same with working with too many hours.

Robyn:

Had a day dream of winning the lottery. Ok, i'll by a house. What kind of plumbing will i have, what color tiles,.... ok this dream sucks!

Darcie:

I find that some of the most rewarding positions pay very little.

Robyn:

The only thing that you really have control over is your own attitude.

Iris:

I feel like the clients i most believe in are non profits.

Peter:

I've just really learned to believe in microsoft.

Karen, what's your situation? You explained to me that leaving your job was not too big a deal and that this is a perspective that is relative to having a kid. Tell me more about that...

Karen:

To you i appear a duck on a lake, not moving but with feet paddling under water... I had money saved. I realized that family is more important. That my long term goals were not compatible with the office situation.

Jonathan:

How do you get your family to support your goals?

Robyn:

Sharing your goals explicitly and creating a culture of goal sharing.

Karen:

You need to build trust.

Peter:

Setting expectations is essential

Robyn:

We will change the world through building community, sharing goals, and being compassionate.
