BarCamp is an ad-hoc gathering born from the desire for people to share and learn in an open environment. It is an intense event with discussions, demos and interaction from participants who are the main actors of the event.

BarCamp's History

BarCamp has now quite an impressive historical record. There is a shared feeling that this should not be lost and 2 pages can be used to keep track of all the unconferences that happened in the past years:

  1. BarCampPastEvents serves as a temporary parking to re-order the list of worldwide events. To keep the current page short and relevant, cut and paste your updates there as they are superceded or the event happens.
  2. BarCampNewsArchive (page is currently locked) keeps tracks of older news updates for past events. This page serves as the historical memory of BarCamp. Events are currently shown there in reverse chronological order.

 

Anti-spam policy

It makes us all sad, but pointers to external pages from the front page will most likely be deleted without notice. Otherwise the page fills up rapidly with difficult-to-detect spam.

Since version 2.0 of PBWiki, users can be authorized as 'Writers' or 'Readers'. By default, new users are authorized as 'Writers', accounts conducting inadequate operations will be turned into 'Readers' as a safety precaution. If the change appears unjustified, please contact  the SiteMaintainers to restore the normal rights for the corresponding account.

I removed the Turkey section entirely. I followed all the links and none of them appeared to have anything to do with BarCamps. Given that I don't speak Turkish I could have easily missed something (a BarCamp sponsored by a hotel reservation service and some link aggregators?) so apologies if I got it wrong.

A great event.
I do not check the page every day so I might have missed some spam or strange links. Now it all seems fine and clean.

Ok, the Turkish chat room spam guys are going all out now, not only adding display="none" link spam sections, but making up stuff in the Turkey section. I'm deleting as fast as I can, but it's something for everybody to watch out for. Having a Turkish speaker confirm none of it is legit would be helpful too. Anyone know of a Wiki hosting platform with some sort of spam control?

Edited the page: Gold Coast barcamp Australia (last entry - downunder :-)) now displays again. Are the lines following it junk? If so, perhaps remove them?
Looks like you need tighter control on who can update the page, to keep the idiot children out.

There were a few thousand links to a spam site that I just deleted from the bottom of the front page. Maybe the front page should require more of an invitation to edit? It's tempting for spammers to nab link juice from such a strong page, I'm sure.

This page is maintained by the community and anyone (with good intentions) is welcome to modify and enhance it. While there are links pointing to legitimate external sites, it always makes the task easier to point to internal pages - that can themselves point to external site.

Is there a way to rename pages and redirect users from the old URL to the new?

The Tokyo Barcamp page names are not in accordance with the Barcamp naming conventions. http://barcamp.pbworks.com/UsingTheBarCampWiki . I wanted to fix them but the only way I can see is to create new pages without spaces, copy the data, then add links to the new URLs. While that would work for the contents, it won't move the comments.

@kylehase I can make the modfications for you. Nevertheless, PBWorks does not seem to handle redirection from the older names so you'll have to modify all the links pointing to the original url with the url of the new page. I'm sending you a mail so you can specify in details the change you'd like me to do.
