What is MobileCamp?

MobileCamp is a one-day event that brings together entreprenuers, students, faculty, and telecom industry professionals to share ideas, network, and discuss the latest advances in the mobile industry. MobileCamp is one of the premier developer-focused events in the Boston region and attracts developers from throughout the Mid-Atlantic regions and as far as California, Europe, and Asia.

What to bring to Camp

  • Willingness to participate: you don't have to lead a meeting, but you shouldn't be a wall flower either - get involved
  • Positive attitude: You're going to hear a lot of different ideas - come with an open mind and ears
  • Demos: got something cool you're working on? Bring it along and share it
  • Business cards: you'll be doing a lot of networking
  • Digital camera: Pictures help explain what went on at the meeting

Tips for Sessions

Encourage Discussion: Camp is about discussions and sharing ideas, not to be bored to tears. It's OK to have a few slides if you need to explain something complex, but no one wants to sit through your Powerpoint 20 slides - leave that for the traditional conferences. We'll have overhead capability in some of the rooms, but why not just write a few notes on the backboard and encourage discussion

Encourage Learning: A lot of us attending work on mobile products and services, and we want to tell everyone about what we're doing and maybe to get them to try stuff out. But, don't expect campers to sit through your standard sales pitch. It's better to tell people about what you learned while developing and delivering your product/service.

Session Ideas:

Here's a list of ideas people will be bringing to Camp:

  1. Ramesh Kumar:2ergo:Future of mobile couponing and mobile commerce
  2. Phillip Zannini:Venti Pixel:Mobile Design. UI/UX for the mobile environment.
  3. Benjamin Ortega::What things should you not do with mobile networks.
  4. Paul Geffen:trovar.com:I would like to talk about how a solo professional can pull together a "web presence." As a self-marketed consultant with his own brand, I've found many ways to create and promote a coherent image. My blog (see http://blog.trovar.com) includes discussion of some of the elements.
  5. Heather Menery:Jumptap :Robust targeting capabilities in mobile (geotargeting, demographic targeting on the carrier portals). What's worked for key verticals? How can you target?
  6. Max Antinori:http://www.maxmediacorp.com/:Developing with PhoneGap for iPhone and Android, based on my experience porting my Species Explorer mobile application from Symbian (Flash Lite 3.1) to these other platforms.
  7. Scott Janousek:Hooken Mobile:Build Once, Deploy to Many. I'd like to talk about solutions to the crossplatform app building problem.
  8. Douglass Turner:The Elastic Image: I'm happy to do host a session on 3D Graphics. Something along the lines of my Boston and New York talk: http://bit.ly/Y1MW8. The big idea here is to try and think of iPhone/iPodTouch/iPad as pure expression devices rather then gaming platform. These devises are a completely new animal.
  9. Noah Tye::Programming for Android in Scala
  10. Anthony Hand, Motorola: Managing Fragmentation Risk on the Android Platform. A session will focus on exploring where there are real areas of fragmentation risk on Android and how to handle them. The discussion will draw heavily upon attendees' collective experience and expertise. Tips ought to be useful for developers & business people looking to create apps for other mobile platforms, as well.
  11. Luke Murray:Awesome Inc:I want to host a session about how to find funding for a mobile startup - focusing of course on the YCominator clones (i.e. Techstars, Launchbox, etc) including ours - comparing them. I'd also like to do a session entitled '5 ways to make money & 5 ways to NOT make money with mobile apps' - which I gave at the Nashville '09 Barcamp.
  12. Jeffrey Tingle::Perhaps - I've been working with jQTouch (a jquery plugin) for iPhone web apps and connecting into Google Health.
  13. Douglas McCarroll::I'd be willing to talk about my LanguageCollaborative project, but the technology that I plan to use is still vaporware so there's a limit to what I can really say. I've created a demo using Flex (you can see it on the website) but the actual project will be created using the 'for mobile' version of Flex that Adobe is currently working on (aka 'Slider'), so all I really know at this point is "how to create a demo for vaporware" (?) ...
  14. Richard Kasperowski:AwesomeCo: 1)How to get a job: for job seekers and people who are hiring, 2) You suck! Use Scrum/XP/Agile and be awesome!, 3) Android developers forum

  25. Eliran Sapir:GreatPoint Ventures:Built to scale, design with scaling in mind.
  26. Doug Levin:CE Fusion Ctr.:Venture Funding

  40. Matthew R Kowalewski::As of now, no; however, if that changes I will let you know ahead of time.
  41. Tim Strazzere:DroidCrew:I might be interested, though I find most people find my work to low-level and are uninterested at these types of events.

  55. Rob Baker:Kabimba Media:FreedomFone demo
  56. Jack Costello:mileBlaster :how to design an app that can be deployed mobile and desktop
  57. Robert C Gray:At-Hand Apps:I'd be interested in holding a session that speaks to our social mission - which is to create opportunities for those who are retired from corporate employment, but don't want another day "watching LifeTime Movies" or "staring at the cat". Thoughts on thriving, during the last phase of life, if your brain did not get shot off, your IQ did not get cut in half, and you are still juiced about life. Innovating under the RADAR of "age-filtering". Etc. - sort of a "SIG Group/Session"
