Recommended Sessions
There are aspects common to nearly all BarCamps which are useful to provide intros (or reminders), especially for first time BarCampers.
- Network. Nearly every BarCamp is held at some venue where there is some level of network access, hopefully at least wifi, and preferably both wifi and ethernet. A "Network Intro" session could cover the following:
- How to configure your Mac/Windows/Linux box to use the network
- How to check the network configuration (e.g. on OSX System Preferences / Network etc., ifconfig, netstat -rn)
- one sentence on DHCP, IP, subnet, router, DNS
- Renew DHCP / Repair the network etc.
- ssh
- portforwarding for email sending
- SOCKS proxy for encrypting http form logins (e.g. for blogging logins)
- Presentations. S5 Intro. How to put your words in slides and onto the Web.
- Downloading the S5 template package. (See also SlideRocket)
- Editing the author / event / license info.
- Edit title / license / URL slide (pick a URL for your presentation)
- Making new slides.
- Simple changes to presentation: colors, backgrounds.
- Upload your presentation to that aforementioned URL
- You're ready to present from any box with a webbrowser.
Some other immediately usable presentation topics:
- Tent setup (picking a good spot, shade, clearing rocks/bumps, efficient setup, windy setup, rain shield, airflow)
- Sleep hacking
- ... etc.
