What is BarCamp Redefining J School?

BarCamp Redefining J School is an afternoon for students, faculty, and professionals to talk about the future of the news, PR and advertising and how schooling could reflect the ever-changing media landscape. It will be a space for students to educate students, teachers to educate teachers and students to educate teachers.

If you've never attended, a BarCamp is an ad-hoc gathering born from the desire for people to share and learn in an open environment. Another term for it is "unconference." The sessions are brainstormed in advance, but the schedule isn't set until the morning of the event and is determined in "open-grid" fashion. Attendees write the titles of sessions they would like to lead on index cards and post those on the grid schedule.

Event details

When: Sunday, October 25th from 12 pm to 4 pm

Where: Allen Hall, University of Oregon, Eugene (Tentative but probable)

RSVP on Facebook or add your name to the "Campers" list below

Suggested readings before the event

Schedule

Topics I propose or would like to hear about (feel free to add your own!)

  • What courses should you take to supplement your journalism education or career? What are good minors to a journalism degree?
  • What do students want from professors? How can students take initiative and enhance classes?
  • Crowdsourcing, and leveraging the knowledge of the community to put together a story
  • Where's the line between PR and journalism?
  • What parallels are there between the news industry and the education industry, and what lessons can be learned?
    • Daniel Bachhuber would be interested in leading this session
  • Digital basics (blogging, RSS, Twitter, Google Alerts, etc.) and how those tools can be used.
    • This session may be a "digital show and tell", where everyone has 3 to 4 minutes to demo one of their favorite tools. - Daniel
  • How to get paid internships and/or launching your own projects (i.e. kickstarting your career while you're in school)
    • Start blogging now. Find a tribe. Beat the student news org and local pros on coverage. Take chances.
  • Where's the line between work and life when building your brand online?
  • Scenario planning for J school in 2020. What does the news industry look like then? What about education?
  • Why are j-school students and maybe all university students so timid? Is it in the culture? Broader problem than j-schools or universities? What do students have to say about what they percieve their role is in their education?
  • How come so many student publications are filled with boring "newspaper writing" rather than innovative storytelling techniques? Do digital natives take Web 2.0 for granted such that they don't see it as a tool for doing journalism? Maybe they're trying to look and act "professional." Maybe they want to fill out a clip file so they can get a job. Do they want those jobs?
  • iPhone/Touch apps for J-school(s)? How would we start that? (Suzi could start this one off)
  • Emotions and journalism: How do they go together? How to balance ethics and considering other people's emotions with the need to tell stories? Yes, age-old question, still needs discussion, esp considering how we use social media and understand our own responses and those of others.  — Suzi
