What is an EduCamp?
EduCamps are BarCamp style un-conferences where educators and people interested in education come and share their projects, ideas and findings. There is no fixed agenda and all attendees are encouraged to share or participate in discussions. The event is free and is open to all interested people.
In a typical un-conference such as the one shown here (Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok 2008), people turn up at a venue and post the topic they want to speak about or discuss on a topic-board. Classrooms and timeslots are then allocated to the speakers. Each speaker or discussion leader gets 30 minutes for their sessions. We usually have 2 or 3 sessions running concurrently so participants can choose the topics they like to see.
The session could be in the form of a presentation or a discussion such as this one from Phnom Penh BarCamp of 2008.
Such un-conference usually also have a gadget corner where participants can try new technology. This one is from the Phnom Penh Barcamp in 2008 showing the 100$ OLPC laptop and couple of e-book readers.
Previous education themed BarCamps (or educamps) were held in Colombia, China, Germany, Ireland and Austria.
Educamp Singapore Themes
Some of us from educational institutions felt that it was a good time to run a BarCamp dedicated to education, hence the EduCamp. Some of the topics we want to discuss are
- Copyrights and Creative Commons
- Building Educational Videos
- Google Tools in Classroom
- Building better presentations
- Photography
- Storytelling
- Ideas on using social networks with students
- Helping students understand cultures around the world
The EduCamp however, need not be restricted to these topics and we encourage educators to suggest topics and lead sessions.
