Social Media Camp SF 2008
Content Tools - room 2, 1:35 - 1:50 PM
Facilitator: Suzanna http://www.GreatAdaptations.org/
Notes: Raines
How many people here blogging, vlogging, flogging? (no, that's another #SMcamp ;-)
Online communication
Attracting readership, money flow = passion.
What's at the core of who you are.
What you want to be
Who you want to interact with
What you want to learn about
Deep interests.
Your Passions:
- Sustainability
- Community: (real-world local in Aspen)
- Yourself - don't pay attention to readership. About self-expression.
My favorite kind of blog - internet as vehicle for creative self-expression
How you know you're on the right track
over time your readers come to you for a reason
they're triggered by soemthing that you do
I write about brain health, online communication (including microblogging), boomer demographic
I can go in a million directions with that
on my blog so long as I can bring everything back to one of those pieces
you've got your core interest
little threads around that
to think about
how you're on the right track for blogging:
learn about that topic on your own
want to do whole life
childhood dream
can't stop thinking about it
exercises - writing. "wild mind" (Natalie Goldberg)
homework: pick up a pen, keep it moving
you're trying to escape that editorial brain that's bringing in all kinds of info, telling you that you have to do things a certain way.
Make a little note, let yourself stream-of-consciousness write
the best tool I've used for 20 years as a writer/author
to open up the gates to your own inner world
keep you on track with what you want to do and be
that's a passion
that's connecting to the passion
Q non-blogger: I'm passionate about content on the web. Even a video - there's some sort of story. Really interested in how the different kinds of media can tell that story. How can one do it concisely, well.
Douglas Bel: audio, podcasting: based on open-source project that used to be major contributor to. A way of giving back to the community.
Q: Sustainability - a large platform, including a blog. Usually I write about the People side. How do people act in ways that promote sustainability. People can create their own social networks on DreamFish.
Q: Anyone using forums?
A: I used to
A: It's a time commitment, like social networking.
Working on your content in a way that attracts readership: use keyword tools
WordTracker, Overture, now Google's Keywords easier to use (free service)
an amazing tool for listening to your readership - shows variations.
type in a couple of words
example "brain health" a few hundred people. vs. 400,000 a different way.
how many people are searching
who's looking for what I'm talking about
Q: How often do you check?
A: When I'm musing, thinking about how I want to work something
Q: How do you go from finding out "yes, they're out there"
A: Work keywords into title of posts
Q: Simple blog hosting/starting?
A: Blogger. Most beginners, or someone in their household can do.
