127 campers joined at an exciting WiCamp at Wipro’s Gurgaon office, with no ppt (surprising), but pure intellect and high voltage excitement. These campers came from firms including Bharti Airtel, Ericsson, Canon, Vmedia Research, Polaris, Sun, IIT Delhi, IIFT Delhi, MDI Gurgaon, MIET Merut, OnYoMo, RangDe, Ciena India, IMT Ghaziabad, The Innovation Workgroup, Science and Innovation Network, Naukriguru and Genpact, apart from Wipro. What made the WiCamp set apart was the very diverse set of audience (as you may see for yourself) and the even more interesting format- BRAINSTORMING. Here’s a crisp take on the Gurgaon WiCamp. Am sure you would be surely making to the upcoming camps.

The session started with the demonstration of two fundamental premise of any WiCamp (Barcamp): We all are different beings, lets appreciate these differences; and there could be more than one right answer!

Shailesh, the founder of OnYoMo, the ambitious Google of Local Search, depicted his experiences for a start-up. In his view, have as much clarity around technology, people (you hire), and the market you address. Soonest that he finished the sentence, there were arguments on “how come one has ‘clarity’ at the outset”. Here you go! The real WiCamp started. Views, counter-views, Post-its, iPod, Walkman, Google, and other archetypal innovations echoed across the floor.

Amongst this entire firework, David, an Innovation Guru, launched himself. David from The Innovation Workgroup did two great things: 1) set the minds in motion by putting forth the question- “Where does an idea come from?” and 2) let’s make two circles and sit around. He broke the news that “innovation is driven by keen observation”. Another gear to this WiCamp!

In came Ram and Smita from RangDe sharing their start-up journey on Social Innovation, especially Micro-finance. Talked on their inspiration, a few roadblocks and ideas from audience at large. Also came in Anuraj from Vmedia Research a demoed one of the latest mobile innovations from the firm. It was a DVD player built-into a mobile handset. The insight came from poor proliferation of media players in Indian market coupled with heavy usage of mobile phones and growing lifestyle segment.

Amid debates and discussion on how and what of Innovation and inspiration, came the talks from Bharti Airtel and Ericsson on how these telecom firms attempt managing innovation within their firms. Of all these conversations, ‘talent’ clearly emerged as the key driver and firm that are able to leverage this soft asset, makes it big in the space of innovation. Sun, one of the early success stories of the dot.com era shared their Sun Startup Essential Program where they give deep discounts to start-ups, apart from offering consultancy around bootstrapping them. Its been quite a success story in the west, but in India they are still catching up.

Sensing that the monotony was setting in, the mood quickly changed from talks to having a Brainstorming sessions. Encouraging freewheeling thinking and building of others’ ideas, the themes chosen were “Innovation in Large Organization” and the “Efficiency and Creativity.” Camper from all corners of the room chipped in with their valuable thoughts. Though campers from start-ups and established enterprise shared their view on the topic, some of the best comments came in from students. Capturing a few: “innovation survives only with an ecosystem”; “innovation calls for equality, breaking hierarchies”; “draft the org into three tiers- self motivated innovators, innovators requiring external motivation and those who can’t innovate, and play accordingly”; “create a culture of sharing practices”; “give a big-brotherly treatment to innovators”; “fight the social stigma of failure”; “start with a Game Plan”; and the best of all “Creativity comes with I and efficiency with We”.

About WiCamp

WiCamp which stands for Wipro’s Innovation Camp is inspired by the silicon-valley styled BarCamps which are un-conference like meetings. Here like minded people come over and share their learning on a topic of mutual interest through presentation, demos, videos, etc.

Who can attend the WiCamp

Students across ages! We all are students wearing different masks, working in organizations run by us or otherwise. To be more specific; invitation goes to Start-ups, Large Firms, VCs, Students, Researchers and by no means limited to the IT industry. The more diverse the more creative!

What would be the takeaway for me

Knowing people and their perspectives on Innovation and Creativity. You would also be encouraged to share your thoughts on the subject and expand your knowledge horizon.
