Discussion

BarCamp Indianapolis 2008 is fresh off the presses, just a couple hours past, so I figure now is as good a time as any to discuss the next BarCamp. The title of this page is just a wiki title, not a suggestion for the actual event name.

When, Where, Why?

  • Do we want this to be annual? Bi-annual? However-often-we-feel-like? I think I'd be game for another one this fall, and annually from then on, depending on the popularity. -- gRegor

  • I think I'd be in favor of this simply being annual, as such. But if there's enthusiasm for doing something sooner than next year, let it be ACTION focused, perhaps. Say, bringing our new-media to bear on "Faith Hope & Love Week" in Indy this summer (July 20-26, 2008). Last summer, a number of us helped in the cafe neighborhood, photoblogging, mp3 interviews, etc. Could we help take this up a notch? (Btw, the whole urban region is now connecting to join this year's FHL Week... thus our scope also could help them do so.) ...Neil

  • FHL 2008 would be a terrific opportunity to showcase SnapFoo moblogging, podcasting, and other such coverage of FHL activities. There are examples of blog posts that I did during FHL 2007 in July 2007 of my blog. (I'd use permalinks, but the wiki doesn't "like" the URLs) Then, let's shoot for doing another round of presentations in January 2009 and use the time to find a larger venue, corporate sponsors, etc. to take it "up a notch" -- Tom Ho

  • I think this being an annual occurrence would be ideal to give people lots of time to get a presentation together. I would like to see really well prepped presentations, since I "get" to see college professors all the time (no offense). I think this group may want to work on creating some "supplemental" material to keep everyone tithed over until we do have the next BarCamp, such as some short videos or write ups. Perhaps, even some of us presenting, as Neil suggested, in other events as sort of "charity work" - sharing our skills and talents with the rest of the inner city. And, as always, people are welcome to come the the Cafe on any Saturday for AskAnythingSaturday.TV. -- Alex

  • I'm not a big fan of using a wiki for a discussion board. I'd like to recommend discussion and event broadcasts on the ning forum and event information on this website. --Stephen

  • Just a reminder that everyone is an administator of the Ning site. So feel free to start discussions there. I Like Dr. Ho's idea of doing two events per year. One based on the classic BarCamp paradigm. And one based on doing something. My only concern is that linking BarCamp so strongly to christian ministries would be reason enough for geeks in the Indy area NOT to participate. For me, the maximum participation of Indy geeks is the paramount driver. I would suggest that a new entity needs to be created to fuse BarCamp with the mission of the church. Maybe... CrossCamp, MissionCamp, BarCampKingdom or something like that.
