What is a BarCamp?

From Wikipedia:

BarCamp is an international network of user generated conferences (or unconferences) - open, participatory workshop-events, whose content is provided by participants. The first BarCamps focused on early-stage web applications, and related open source technologies, social protocols, and open data formats. The format has also been used for a variety of other topics, including public transit, health care, and political organizing. (See the Wikipedia page for more)

Barcamp Christchurch will be a fun, free event with interesting people talking about what they find interesting. You could be one of them!

BarCamp Christchurch

When: Saturday, 10th April, 2010

Where: Canterbury Innovation Incubator, 200 Armagh St, Christchurch (Map: http://tinyurl.com/ciinz)

Entry is free.

Speaking at BarCamp

Anyone is welcome to speak about almost any topic on the day. Because BarCamp is an 'unconference', there's no set schedule until the beginning of the Barcamp, when we determine the speaking order and how many rooms to use based on how many people have something to talk about.

Talking slots will generally be half an hour long, inclusive of question and transition time, but the timetable will be pretty loose and longer or shorter talks will be accommodated. There will certainly be a round of "lightning" presentations of no longer than 5min each. There will also be an hour in the middle for lunch.

If you're interested in speaking, prepare a presentation of 15-30min. The more interesting your talk, the better! There will be opportunities for shorter and more off-the-cuff presentations as well.

Presentations

All presentations are scheduled the day they happen. Prepare in advance, but come early to get a slot on the wall. Presenters are responsible for making sure that notes/slides/audio/video of their presentations are published on the web for the benefit of all and those who can’t be present.

Proposed Sessions

(If you have a session you'd like to run, you can sign up for a free account on pbwiki, edit this page, and add it to the list below, email one of the planners, or send out a message on our mailing list. All topics are welcome.)

Jonathan Hunt - Gov 2.0/Apps for Democracy/Civic Apps/Open NZ

Morris Johns - developing an online timesheet application (Definitely not an infomercial - focus could be technical, market, or business structure, from geek POV).

Russel Werner - Discussing technical details about the Crowd Fusion Platform (Node database, IoC container, MVC framework, etc) and/or A guided walkthrough on creating a blog/database/wiki hybrid with Crowd Fusion. TBD. See features and NYTech Meetup Presentation for more info.

Pete Nicholls - Rapid web design prototyping with HTML5, Haml, Sass and WebKit

Topics you would like to hear about

(If you have a session you'd like to hear about, add it to the list below or post on our mailing list.)

Experiences/examples with NoSQL

Mobile dev/apps case studies

Since this barcamp is two days before the proposed ACTA meeting in Wellington - a session on ACTA/Copyright/Software freedom might be in order.

Experiences as a seller or buyer of online services (e.g. odesk.com, guru.com, getafreelancer.com, rentacoder.com).
