Social Innovation BarCamp Delhi is a gathering to discuss how crowdsourcing in a Barcamp setting can be used to solve problems in the social context. The motivation for this is to spark social innovation at the local grassroot level across towns and cities in India. Can entrepreneurial skills and ideas be used to come up with out of the box solutions that eventually give rise to social enterprises?

“You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete” – Buckminster Fuller

The above quote is a starting point for social innovation but the question is

-       How do you build a new model? Do you build it yourself? Do you take the help of others? Who would you team up with?

-      Do you even know what the problems are to fight and change existing reality?

-       Can we assume that innovation will be born naturally or can we help spark it?

-       What would it take to create a generation of social innovators?

This is an informal open to all meeting where we will brainstorm ideas, explore opinions and come up with a basic roadmap and plan to put together a separate event that actually implements these ideas.

Event details

When - Evening,  Sat April 3rd 2010

Where - Location TBD in New Delhi (looking for a bookshop, studio or office space where brainstorm can happen)

Details of Event

This will be a 2-3 hour brainstorm session with a whiteboard/flip chart used to capture ideas. Each session will tackle a question. Each of the sessions can be driven by a volunteer. Please put your name in front of the session you are interested in.

Proposed Session Topics

  • Innovation is bred from creativity which itself is a long process. Is it realistic to spark social innovation in a Barcamp crowdsourcing session? Can a Barcamp setting be applied to solving tough, serious social issues?
  • What problem sets are ideal for crowdsourcing and social innovation? How do we gather intelligence on what those problems are?
  • Can designers work with lawyers and engineers to come up with social innovation solutions? Who is the target audience for creating a generation of social entrepreneurs?
  • What are the proposed next steps and roadmap for putting together an event? Or it is a waste of time?

Topics I would like to hear about
