Welcome to the organising page for CityCamp Melbourne. The purpose of this page is to allow us to do our planning and preparation openly and collaboratively.

It's early stages, and we're looking for organisers and volunteers at this point. If you would like to be involved as

  1. Organiser
  2. Volunteer (on the actual day)
  3. Sponsor (cash or in-kind, e.g. food or venue)

...then email CityCampMelb@gmail.com explaining your interest in CityCamp, and read on below to find out the many ways that you can help us.

If you'd like to wait and see, follow @citycampmelb on Twitter to receive updates.

Action Steps

  1. Create Graphics
  2. Create a One-pager on website
  3. Create paper One-pager
  4. Establish the Venue
  5. Manage the Catering
  6. Decide on event Timing

If you see bold words in the above list, it means that there is Heading below with that name where you can find more information

Theme

  1. Knowledge, Sharing Knowledge (considering the correlation with Knowledge Week, this is the top choice for now)
  2. Sustainability / Climate Change
  3. Social entrepreneurship
  4. Local Gov 2.0
  5. Citizen participation
  6. DIY government / DIY solutions /  “Do it ourselves”

Timing

  • November 20th or 21st - during Knowledge Week
    • TedXMelbourne is the 20th
    • Trampoline Day (other Melbourne-based inconference) was on a Sunday, which might set some expectation
    • It’s just that Sunday is not officially Knowledge Week, and many overseas participants may have left
  • 1 day event only

Venue

These are just ideas. Securing a venue is a priority.

  1. State Library
  2. Museum
  3. Town Hall
  4. Interesting arts spaces

Catering

Unconferences usually provide food of some part, and the quality of the food is usually directly proportional to attendee happiness. It's a good opportunity for a local food provider to show off their wares

Ideas Platform

  • “Use an “ideation platform” like UserVoice or IdeaScale to collect topic and project suggestions and let your campers vote for the topics and projects they like most.  This is a great way to focus your event.  Don’t discourage, however, break-out sessions that are of interest to only small groups.”

Sponsors

Money

  • Maximum sponsorship in this category will be limited to $500.00 as per CityCamp standard practice.
  • CityCamp recommends the following sponsorship levels:
    • CityCamp Partner @ $500
    • CityCamp Supporter @ $250
    • Friend of CityCamp @ no set amount (contributor’s choice)
  • We will try to avoid having any leftover money
  • Organisers and volunteers will not be paid for their time
  • Any leftover money will be held in a fund that will be used to seed future Australian City Camps.
  • Do we need a fiscal sponsor so that donations are tax deductible, and so that there is an independent bank account?

CityCamp Melbourne

Gov 2.0 goes local

Purpose

The purpose of this brief is to explain what a CityCamp is, the opportunity it presents for Melbourne and Melbournians, and how you can be involved.

Background

CityCamp is an “unconference” focused on innovation for municipal governments and community organizations. It is related to the broader trends of Gov 2.0 and Open Government, which facilitate increased citizen participation in government and improved service delivery through new social technologies and collaborative approaches.

As an unconference, content for CityCamp is not programmed for a passive audience.  Instead, content is created and organized by participants and coordinated by facilitators.  Participants are expected to play active roles in sessions. This provides an excellent format for creative, open exchange geared toward action.

The first CityCamp was held in Chicago, Illinois, 23-24 January, 2010. CityCamp is inspired by previous events such Transparency Camp and Gov 2.0 Camp. Organisers have now launched a CityCamp World Tour, with events springing up in cities around the globe.

  • New York
  • San Francisco
  • London
  • Barcelona
  • St. Petersburg

New locations are springing up regularly. Visit CityCamp.com to see the latest locations, and to learn more about the movement.

Melbourne Details

CityCamp Melbourne is tentatively scheduled for one day, on the weekend of Novemeber 20th and 21st. This would allow CityCamp Melbourne to coordinate with the Knowledge Week. The theme of the event would therefore be focused on sharing knowledge.

Over the course of the one day event, citizens and municipal officials will share ideas and projects, and work together to develop new solutions. This will help to build a community of civic-minded technologists, social entrepreneurs, and forward-thinking municipal officials. It will also help to export Melbourne’s innovations to the global community, and import global best practices into Melbourne.

The best ideas often emerge from the bottom up. As a globally-networked unconference which is free to attend, CityCamp Melbourne will play an important role in shaping Melbourne's future - but only with your help.

How you can be involved

  • Organiser - Help us plan and promote the event, and get to know some great people in the process.
  • Sponsor - Donate funds up to $500 or in-kind resources, and get exposure for your brand (logo posted on the website and at the event, plenary mentions)
  • Volunteer - Help us make it a great event on the actual day, and be part of something special
  • Attendee - Show up, be inspired, and perhaps inspire others with a presentation
