Lance Weiler’s Tips for Building a Storyworld
Film, TV, and game architect Lance Weiler closed his presentation at DIY Days, NY, with some tips on how to create a storyworld. “You don’t have to do what I do, you can do whatever you want,” he said. However, these are six guiding principles he’s learned to value.
1) Take time to evaluate the story you want to tell
2) Ask yourself the hard questions: Why will anyone care? Is this the best way to tell the story?
3) Don't hold tight to your characters. When constructing a storyworld the themes that drive the story are often stronger.
4) Consider how you can show not tell.
5) Make it easy for your audience to become collaborators.
6) Don't let the world get in the way of the story.
Lance Weiler is the creator of "A Storytelling Pandemic," an experience he launched at Sundance 2011. http://blogs.wsj.com/speakeasy/2011/01/20/sundance-2011-lance-weiler-brings-a-pandemic-to-park-city/
