Balancing Frustration and Passion

Intent with this talk: Encourage everyone to find their passion and act on it without getting frustrated.

Everyone goes home with one thought/action/inspiration.

Frustration and passion are very closely linked.

We are all intelligent professionals that can effect change.

Organizing Barcamp: an example of bridging passion and frustration. Part of letting go of frustration is to be willing to let things completely fall flat - be willing to accept failure, learn from it, and try something else.

Lessen frustrations by getting involved - don't just complain about things that frustrate you, DO something about it. Acting can lower your frustration levels - gives you a rewarding experience for your frustration.

Example of Frustration: Lots of ideas, no startup money - it will make money, but not right away. How do you get paid to do cool stuff? Look for alternative ways of funding to get something like what you want, and work towards it from there. Start by starting. Ask for help/advice/mentoring.

Asking for help: Have a minimum of three people who are committed to seeing through the project. Otherwise you are way less likely to succeed.

How do you change momentum of something that is frustrating you because you feel it's going the wrong way?
1. Enact change internally
or if that doesn't work, or the group has calcified, or you're dealing with a blocker, or you reach a point that it's too much
2. Get your group together and branch off and do things your own way - know when to fork.

Drupal Community: The community has grown immensely, but not many new people have stepped up to help out. Growth has led to a split ideology of what the group is about. Someone has to be in charge - there has to be leadership, but we have to ask for help to prevent burnout from individuals. Build in an automatic expiration date in being involved, and develop transition planning.
Do people know what effort is required to put these camps on?

Specific Asks work better than general ones: Who can lead this part, as opposed to who wants to help. This creates another dynamic of having to manage people.

When people help out, what is the reward? If I volunteer, what do I get out of it? Need to share this kind of information, whether it's tangible or esoteric.

"I totally want to do a whatevercamp"

Observations:
Effectuating Change by linking people and doing things - it behooves us to be responsible with that, take advantage of it, and shape what it can be.
Why do people get involved? There's no one personality or singular reason - wanting to do small contributions, wanting to be part of the big picture - how do you motivate so many different people

Light at the end of the tunnel: You need to see it to keep yourself motivated.
When you have a lot of passion & projects going on, it can be easy to get lost in them. Having other people or a coach to help you with things - and can make you accountable to someone.

W2 Clustering infrastructure so that overall events can be less difficult to plan & manage.

What about just setting low expectations so you don't get let down/fail?
Mark Busse: If you can go into a situation with high expectations and know how you want to change things, set a time limit for your involvement and aim to make those changes.
This is great if you know what you're getting into, but it maybe won't work if you don't - what about real-time triage?

Sometimes it depends on what kind of person you are - optimistic or pessimistic?

What it comes down to is you just have to be okay with being wrong, doing things wrong, or failing.

It seems to come down to issues of governance. We aren't given many good models of governance. Non-profit, co-operative, etc.

When providing community services, we have a responsibility to be more democratic and innovative - how do we improve and set targets?

How can we elicit change in our lives to mitigate the frustrations and harness our passions? There is no voice if you don't say anything.
