Welcome to BarCamp Africa
BarCampAfrica 2008 will be held at the Google Campus in Mountainview on 10/11/2008 as a way to bring people interested in Africa, on a variety of levels and topics, together in one place for a day of exploration, connection and enjoyment.
Mission
BarCamp Africa/Silicon Valley brings people, institutions and enterprises interested in Africa - as a topic, an opportunity, or a place of action - together in one location to exchange ideas, build connections, re-frame perceptions and catalyze action that leads to positive involvement and mutual benefit between Silicon Valley and the continent of Africa.
Goals
BarCamp Africa will:
- bring conversations about technology and Africa under one roof, allowing individuals, organizations and corporations working for positive change in Africa to sync and collaborate
- enable participants to see Africa in a new light based on facts, statistics and fresh voices, leading to a more positive and objective view than what popular media conveys
- encourage new connections and support & illuminate existing relationships, helping to strengthen the Africa-Silicon Valley network
- showcase the magnitude of the African business opportunity, leading to a better framework for envisioning and understanding development and investment
- bridge the divide between “us” and “them” in participants' thinking and interaction while highlighting the diversity of Africa
- provide an ideal platform for our sponsors to educate a highly qualified community on how they are positively making an impact in Africa
BarCamps represent a fast-growing format for organizing highly productive topical meetings. As an international network of “user generated conferences” mirroring the best qualities of open-source and social technologies, the BarCamp structure focuses on high-quality content, active participation by all, and a strong focus on sustainability and collaboration. Literally dozens of BarCamps are held worldwide in any given month. http://barcamp.org serves as an information center for BarCamps and similar events, guiding best practices and operational recommendations and consolidating worldwide input on BarCamp events and the content and value they generate.
Often referred to as “Conference 2.0,” BarCamps are by nature intertwined with Web and social network communications and the public sharing of information via live blogging, the use of Wikis, and guidelines for tagging that facilitates the discovery of information resulting from the conferences.

Questions
- How do I add my details to this page? You can either click on EDIT and then enter the password that is given at the top left of the page; or you can register at barcamp and then edit the page.
- What are the best ways to include participation from people living in Africa who cannot physically attend BarCampAfrica? Would be great if we could get pitches/presentations from companies in Africa - pre-recorded, presented by reps, or streamed as makes sense.
