World’s Greatest “Un-conference” Hits Austin
BarCampAustin delivers ad-hoc technology collaboration, pod casting, blogging, mashups, meetups, robots, and pirates to Austin’s technology community this weekend.
BarCampAustin is an ad-hoc un-conference born from the desire for people to share and learn in an open environment. It is an intense event with discussions, demos, and interaction from attendees. Anyone with something to contribute or with the desire to learn is welcome and invited to join. The event will be held this Saturday March 11th at the Thistle Café at 6th and Lavaca from 9am to at least midnight. Everyone is invited to learn more about the event at the meet and greet party, Friday March 10th, which will kick off at 7pm at the Thistle Café.
"Bar Camp is an expression of community. It's passionate people coming together to engage, to plan, to scheme about changing the world doing work that they love.” Said Chris Messina (aka factoryjoe), BarCamp founder and Flockstar. “We've basically taken the hallway conversations that happen at most old-school conferences and placed them squarely in the center of the event. And what you get, well, you'd have come to BarCamp to understand just what makes BarCamp different.”
This is the first year for BarCampAustin. The event will feature 13 open sessions, 2 robotics displays, 2 panels on open source software and community economy, and a WordPress Meetup/Mashup during dinner. There will also be several giveaways for participants during the day. The event will transform from technology conference to an ad-hoc party at 9pm when the Jolly Garagers kick off an evening full of activities.
“Austin is the prefect city to host a BarCamp. Thanks to the support of the local community we’ve been able to create a stellar event for less than the cost of admission to other comparable conferences” said William Hurley (aka whurley), organizer BarCampAustin. “Form the combat robotics to pod casting, mashups to late night tech parties, this will be Austin’s technology event of the year”.
