What is BarCamp?

BarCamp is an unconference born from the desire for people to share and learn in an open environment. It is an intense event with discussions, demos and interaction from attendees. The BarCampChennai focusses on Web 2.0, Social Media and Next Generation Internet.

BARCamp is an open, welcoming, once-a-year event for geeks to camp out for a couple days with wifi and smash their brains together. It’s about love and geekery and having a focal point for great ideas, like FOOcamp but open.

The event will be free or very close to free. But there's a catch! Partipants are expected to contribute back to the conference by participating actively. "Active participation" might mean giving a presentation, helping with a presentation, blogging or podcasting the event, or whatever other creative ways to contribute people can come up with.

There is no audience. Only participants! This is unlike any conference you have been to before. It's new, it's different and it's going to happen in our city. Anyone with something to contribute or with the desire to learn is welcome and invited to join. When you come, be prepared to share with barcampers. When you leave, be prepared to share it with the world.

NO SPECTATORS, ONLY PARTICIPANTS

What will be Discussed at the BarCamp?

The Next Generation Internet, Web 2.0, Ajax, Mobile Computing, Open Source and such.

Note: The topics to be presented are platform independent and company independent.

If you are interested in a new topic, feel free to add them here.

Why?

To learn, meet people who share different interests, contribute, and push yourself and your thinking.

When?

8th and 9th April 2006. That's Saturday & Sunday. Yayy!

Where?

We have a choice between IIT Madras, Anna University and a few tech companies. We'll decide soon. We'll need a room that will seat atleast 100 folks. The room *must* have WiFi.

Things To Do

The beauty of this unconference is to involve all in the organizing. The beauty lies in group collaboration.

Ok, here's stuff that we need to get done.

  • List down Help Committees. Give areas where folks who want to help can contribute.

  • Start work on the press release for the event*

  • Create a press release. Media might be interested in covering the event. It's unique and newsy.

  • List out the things that needed for the event (eg. name tags, chart papers, marker pens, extention boxes etc )

  • Design a nice looking poster.

  • Set up a Google Groups for organizers.

  • Set up a paypal account through which folks can contribute money to help.

  • A new wiki page for 'Ideas' to be set up

  • Create logos in different sizes and put them on an exclusive wiki page.

  • Put the dates on the Wikisite.

  • Create a budget page where all expenses are shared transparently. This way the sponsors will know how their money has been spent. Oh! Does that mean we will now have to open a new bank account? Hmm..

  • Identify a venue. Should seat atleast 100. Have WiFi. Preferably in a tech company.

  • Encourage bloggers to spread the word

  • Write a kickarse proposal for prospective sponsors.

  • Create separate wiki pages which has detailed information on tips for presenters, documentors and moderators. Also need a detailed page on how to get in sponsors.

  • A small music event would be nice. If one of the participants can sing or play the guitar that would be a welcome distraction from the techie stuff.

  • What about folks who aren't in Chennai but are keen to follow the events virtually? How do we cater to such folks? Any ideas?

  • Create a video montage explaining what a BarCamp is.

  • Create a nice big banner as a backdrop for the stage.

  • Make a list of top level invitees. Big names do add prestige to the event.

  • Create a nice navigation system that stiches together all the pages together (eg. ideas, sponsors, logos to the home site)

  • Create more logos and banners. Something like this

  • Create a new page that has more information on the campers. Photo, designation email, phone numbers etc. This will help folks know who's coming along and help in better networking at the event.

  • Prepare an invitation email to be sent out to folks. See Foo invitation.

  • Write to Hyderabad barcamp organizers and check if we can do a connect between both the camps. Maybe a video conference or a telephonic talk between the members.

  • Make a virtual white board where timetable is put up so that folks can fill in the slots that are convenient to them. Check what Austin has done. - Aswin is working on this

  • Have a Criccer game( A cross between cricket and soccer)on Sunday morning. That would be awesome. [still considering this? - YES]

  • Add simple tips on how to add yourself to this wiki. Simple and easy steps.

Send guidelines to presenters.

  • Send reminders to all those registered participants to update their topic.

  • For folks who are based out of chennai and who can't make it to the event, they can video record their presentation and we can host it up on YouTube and link it from this Wiki. This way they have a sense of participation.

And best of all, its in the interest of tech community and the spirit of sharing and learning. Add your name to the particpatnts list above. It might also help to shoot out an email to Kiruba@Kiruba.com or call 98415 97744. And, most important of all spread the word about BarCampChennai on your blogs or email your techie friends. Every little help counts.
