A BarCamp is an ad-hoc gathering born from the desire for people to share and learn in an open environment. It is an intense event with discussions, demos, and interaction from participants. Here is a quote from the wikipedia description:

BarCampDakar 2008 will be held in Dakar on 18/10/2008 as a way to promote IT culture and social business in Senegal and subsaharianAfrica, on a variety of levels and topics, together in one place for a day of exploration, connection and enjoyment.
