BAR CAMP DALLAS III IS OVER.

If you attended, make sure to leave feedback below!

This is what you would have done, had you attended:

  • Pre-Register HERE
  • Also RSVP here: http://upcoming.org/event/136629/
  • Yes, you have to both register and RSVP. Don't ask. {1}
  • The tags are: barcamp barcampdallas barcampdallas3. Use them! Start now!
  • Show up at Microsoft at 10 AM Sat morning and check in at the front desk
  • Go upstairs to the 4th floor
  • Grab a choice timeslot for your presentation (good slots go fast)
  • Check out https://jambo.net/web-site/Group.vm?group=1730 (it's cool)
  • Have geeky fun!

Microsoft has kindly provided extra people at the front desk during the morning rush, it would be best to show up then. At other MS events the front desk has requested an ID to match up against your pre-registration, so keep that in mind if you've registered as s00p3r g33k or something. It should be possible to register and check-in later in the day if you absolutely, positively can't be there in the morning, but think of all the geeky morning fun you'll be missing!

{1} Just had to ask? The registration form goes to Microsoft, as a requirement for using their (completely standard OS X/Linux/Etc-compatible 802.11) wireless access. The Upcoming RSVP is to let the organizers know you're really serious about showing up. Since it's free, people have a habit of signing up but then not showing up, leading to much waste. (The list on upcoming is just to get an attendee count, the fake email addresses don't need to match :-) )

What to bring:

We're camping out (literally!) so feel free to bring your tents and sleeping bags. Other things you might want to consider bringing along:

  • Powerstrips
  • Laptops
  • A selection of Mac VGA dongles (somebody always forgets theirs)
  • Pillows ?
  • A contribution to the event, whether it's a full-blown presentation or simply an open mind and a commitment to start interesting conversations. (A presentation would be good, though)
  • Anything that you might need to make your presentations a success.

Did you blog about it?

QUESTIONS

Question: Is there a contingency plan in case Dallas ices over on Saturday?

Question: Will there be projectors for the presentations? - Ralph Green

Question(in 6 parts): Could you describe this 4th floor? Is is exposed to the outdoors? Is that why people would want tents? Would a sleeping bag suffice? Are there bathrooms, or is this some unfinished area? Is there power and light?

Answer: The tent is just for fun, it's indoors on a finished floor. Main discomfort factors are thin carpet and (I assume) a lack of showers.

Topics - What would everyone like to see discussed?

  • I'd like to see a discussion on creating CSS friendly web pages from different back end systems. (PHP, .NET, ColdFusion)
  • GTD for the developer (or any other methodology for managing the madness and "getting it done")
  • Developing (and testing) in a virtual environment
  • State of Web 2.0 in Texas
  • Startup Showcase/Demo's
  • Mini DemoCampDallas (1 hour set aside for demo-camp style demoa) Contact ChristopherStJohn if you're interested, since the number of slots would necessarily be limited. Also note you can always sign up for a regular slot for your demo, I just though the DemoCamp format was fun.
  • Half-Baked Dot Com Entrepreneurial Improv Theater (stolen from Amit's session at BarCampNYC2, which I think was stolen from someplace else :-) ) teams of 5 compete to come up with the best business plan (product, logo, marketing plan, revenue model, tagline) using a randomly chosen company name. Each team has 15 minutes, a panel of celebrity VC judges provides feedback. Need celebrity VC judges! (maybe Alex Muse + ???)
  • I am considering a philosophical question, but I have not decided if it would be out of place. To wit: If a friend tells you they are having problems with a Windows XP system, is it ethical to help them use XP?
  • What is so cool about Python?
  • Retail experience and the subtle changes that make a difference
  • The Digital Home .. is it really here yet?
  • Drupal
  • SWARC (SouthWest Association of Robotic Combat) will have their meeting at noon on Saturday. The meeting is open to the public, so it is a perfect forum for BarCamp. If you're not sure what robotic combat is think Battlebots or Robot Wars, which are subsets of this hobby/compitition.
  • Integrating Flex with .NET/RoR/PHP. I'll be presenting a solution for integrating .NET, RoR or PHP applications with the Flex clients. Contact Mark Piller with any questions: mark AT themidnightcoders dot com
  • Show Us Your Workflow! Coordinated shoulder-surfing MC'd by Adam Keys
  • Developing (and testing) in a virtual environment -- Someone mentioned this, wasn't sure if this was a talk someone is actually giving, or just a topic someone would like to see covered. I will prepare a short talk on this topic (Todd M)
  • Bonesaw: A case study in vulnerability discovery within open source software (Todd M)
  • topic for SUN - plan next BarCamp event = BarCampDallas 4
  • Add your topic

Schedule of Events

Suggested:

  • Friday night - Pre-Party -- 8 o'clock at Lee Harvey's.
  • First 1/2 plan daily events and topics
  • Saturday night - Some sort of mixer at the Microsoft Cafeteria (8-12?)
    • Play pool, XBox 360, etc...
  • Sunday (wake up anyone that fell asleep) we'll probably want to have some times for registration for anyone that didn't come on Sat)

Prizes / Doorprizes

We have a couple of items that have been donated. We can either do contests during BarCamp, or random drawings at the end.. any contest ideas?

Items: (so far)
