Use the cloud or roll your own web hosting

    • Overview

More and more companies are using Amazon to host their web sites. This session will discuss the pros and cons of using EC2, AWS and S3 vs hosting your own site.

    • Discussion

The fact that companies like http://zimanda.com/ can build services on top of Amazon's services and still turn a profit is a testament to the cost effectiveness of Amazon's products. There are few companies in the world that beat Amazon's prices by building out their own hosting.

Sites that help you setup EC2

  • rightscale.com (a bit expensive.)
  • scaler ??

    • Other Cloud Providers

Microsoft is building a service due out next year

    • What do do when Amazon goes down

Amazon's S3 and other services have had some pretty public outages since most web startups are now using them. As time goes by the uptime should only improve and is probably better than most home grown solutions.

If you want a friendly failwhale page to show on your site when/if the amazon services you require go down you could host a failure page on a different host and use www.dnsmadeeasy.com for failover.

Could potentially have failure page hosted on CDN. Panther is a cheaper CDN solution http://www.pantherexpress.net/ than Akamai. Worth looking into.

    • Going International

EC2 allows for instances outside of the US. This is great if your company is planning on going global.
