Barcamp Jacksonville!

BarCampers, Hi, this is Judson, head of Barcamp Jacksonville. BarCamp Jacksonville is only about 20 days away, and we have had a much less outcome than we initially expected. If you are currently a part of any groups that would be interested in Barcamp Jacksonville, let me know, and tell them about it. As well, we do not have enough speakers for the event. We urge all the campers to come and speak on a topic that they know best. Cokes and bottled water will be provided along with donuts. The Landing for lunch is within walking distance (Starbucks). Finally a parking lot is located across from the Main Street entrance to the library (minimal fees apply). Thanks, Judson

June 17th 2006, 10am to 5pm

Barcamp Jacksonville (FL) was created to facilitate social and business networking among developers, designers, "idea guys" and to help investors and leaders meet up and find team members and create startups. Also, there will be interactive sessions, demos, and more to showcase talent and initiatives. The purpose of the Jacksonville location is to get people "excited" about technology in the North East Florida area, and to find out where web designers/developers are in Jacksonville and the First Coast. This does not mean we're not letting people outside Jacksonville come. Anyone is welcome of course.'Stay tuned.

What's a Barcamp?

COMMUNITY AND INFORMATION

"BarCamp is an ad-hoc un-conference born from the desire for people to share and learn in an open environment. It is an intense event with discussions, demos and interaction from attendees. Anyone with something to contribute or with the desire to learn is welcome and invited to join."

Barcamp Contributers! (topic- name)

We really need some people to do sessions. There's no pressure or anything, but without presenters, we're just a buncha geeks sitting in a room! Everything's quite casual, and you can lead anything from a presentation to an open discussion between people, so your not in the spotlight. Prepare in advance, but come early to get a slot on the schedule. Make sure you bring any slides, videos etc with you on a CD/flashdrive, or on your laptop with S-video out. The venue is providing an A/V setup as well.

Sessions

Sessions are 20-40 minute lectures on a topic.

  • Web 2.0, the basics - Judson C.
  • DOM Scripting: Writing unobtrusive Javascript - Joey M.
  • Utilizing RSS for trend/issue monitoring - Josh H.

Lightning Talks

Lightning Talks are brief 5-15 minute talks about a specific topic. Perfect for people that don't like talking too long.

  • Web Startup Business Tips - Dennis E.
  • Demo of ClaimID - Judson C.
  • Blogging in Jacksonville: A hyper-local approach - Joey M.

Group Discussions

Group Discussions are just open discussions about a certain topic. They're good, but we only need 1-3.

  • Buisness Model of Podcasting - Brainstorming on the buisness model of podcasting

News

  • May 5, 2006: Thanks to everyone who have been blogging about the event. Keep it coming! It seems that I made a horrible mistake: The conference is from 10am to 5pm not 10am to 6pm. Sorry about that. I realize some people want it longer, but to let people come when there not at work, we have to do weekends. And weekends are shorter hours at the library. If all goes well at this barcamp, I would expect an all day or multi-day conference somewhere else as well. I am printing out flyers soon, and we will pass those on to coffee shops, compusa, and maybe a few college bulletin-boards. If anyone goes to FCCJ, or UNF, and would like to pass a few around or post them up, download the flyer at the bottom and shoot me an email that your doing so. -j

  • May 4, 2006: Thanks Chris for the awesome logo!

  • May 3, 2006: I dig The Jacksonville Library. I really do. So BarcampJacksonville is going down on June 17th 2006 at the Jacksonville Public Library. This library rocks. It's about 5 months old, and there are 4 stories. I have counted 6 plasma displays in the library so far, I know there are more. I'll take some pictures of some of the cool sections and put the up here. We have reserved a 50' by 50' section for this barcamp, and we have a projector, a ton of tables and chairs etc. etc. We are contacting BAWLS, to see if they will sponsor us some drinks. We are setting a limit of people for right now. We are able to expand from there, but we think that is a good limit. We are extremely lucky, because on June 30th, they are making you pay for these events, which would be about 5-600 dollars. Stay tuned for more details.

  • April 29, 2006: We like the main library in Jacksonville. After we go on a quick tour, we think we will apply to get space there.
  • April 27, 2006: BarCamp Jacksonville announced.

Deets

What

Spend the day learning about web 2.0, web development, webdesign, online startups, and more. Get a chance to meet with web developers, designers, online entrepreneurs (the idea guys), to share your ideas, and create buisness relationships.

What to Bring

  • Money - For parking and food (Estimate $20-30 dollars just to be safe)
  • Laptop - The whole place has Wi-Fi. Don't bring a desktop computer, you'll be moving around the room alot.
  • Materials- If you are helping out, make sure you bring a CD or flash drive with any pp presentations or media you need.

What not to Bring

  • Beer: Sorry guys, no beer here! We're in a library, and it's an open to all ages event. Feel free to bring BAWLS.

Where/When

We are putting the event here:

Jacksonville Main Library

303 N. Laura Street

Jacksonville, FL 32202

It's a beautiful and crazy library, there are plasma displays in the library, and a teen section with crazy seats, etc. I'll take some pictures later. We have a wonderful 50'x100' multi-purpose room (or something similar to that), with projectors and seats.

It's beauty is summed up here, at it's grand opening in November:

The Event is on June 17th 2006, on a saturday, from 10am to 5pm. This isn't exactly the day we would like, because the next day is fathers day. This eliminates some out of area people, and we apologize for that, but they are starting to charge people starting on the 30th, and the week after has a Mac User Group (they kind of fight each other) and the week before is booked.

Who

  • Anyone who want's to spend a day learning and discussing the nitty-gritty details of Web 2.0 from AJAX to Video Podcasting.

Barcamp Planners

Promotional Material

Promotional material is being created, and we also intend to have t-shirts for sale, unless we can find a sponsor to give them for free. We will also have downloadable 8.5x11 posters, logos, and more.
