3. SimonLaw: I have two issues with your question, Anonymous Coward. My first is that your criticism is offensive and non-constructive. The second is that BarCampMontreal has always benefited from talks outside the scope of technology. Shouldn't we be encouraging topics that expand our horizons?
4. SylvainCarle : well I also have issues about this topic. As opened as I am to diversity and learning new things, this is really not something I am interested in learning. Maybe we could have a "side track" for these kind of subject, stay open for them but not as the core content of barcamp? Anyone with opinions regarding this session?
5. SimonLaw: This is a good point, Sylvain. DavidCrow mentions that TorCamp has had problems with things such as a narrow focus on topics and the fact that many presentations are thinly veiled sales demos. I think for now, it is good for BarCamp to veer on the side of diversity because it can give us novel ideas that relate to whatever you're interested in. And if you really dislike what's going on, you can talk with the presenter afterwards about why you were upset. I see a lot of people get really excited when they hear someone talking about "weird" topics like starting a business, or open-source cinema, or connecting communities to artists.
6. SylvainCarle : well, as long as we agree that veering towards pornography and sex trade is *not* something we want to promote as the core content of barcamp and we have a parrallel "exploration" track, I think we are ok with this. I think we still maybe want to err more on the safe side, but that's a personnal call, I don't know what the rest of the participants think. Maybe we could have a community vote on the presentations where such a flag is raised (à la Flickr "flag this as offensive").
7. EvanProdromou: So, I'm of two minds about this talk, but I'd like to err on the side of openness and diversity. I'm less concerned with being shocked at sexual content than with being complicit in the objectification of women or children. I hope that M. Woo is ready for a difficult crowd...
8. PatrickTanguay : I agree with Evan (and Sylvain's side track idea). Are we even sure it's the actual subject matter of the talk and not some kind of "shocking" analogy leading into "challenges of building a porn site" or some such thing? (Probably not but, you know, might be good to know before getting all excited about the issue ;) )
9. MadameWoo : Hey guys, you might note that I'm female, so unlikely to be pro-exploitation of women and children. I wanted to talk about the sex trade in the developing world because it is a topic that is either sensationalized or glorified without people really knowing anything about it. Last year, I made friends with some prostitutes and learned about their lives. I discovered that some common ideas about the sex trade are largely true ("it's racist") but some of them are not ("Thailand has a lot of child prostitution" -- child prostitution aimed at Westerners is now uncommon in Thailand, but it is still a problem in its less wealthy neighbors). I thought people would enjoy hearing a different point of view on a complex topic. But this is generating too much controversy, so I'm going to speak about something different.
10. ChrisCar : I would like to hear about your topic! I did not know either that BarCampMontreal is about tech-stuff only.

Do we still restrict the presentations to 15 minutes? Je pense que ça a bien marché la dernière fois... Aussi je propose un nouveau format, des "high five", des toutes petites présentations de 5 minutes, share a tip, a trick, an information with the community. That should be fun and entertaining and gives a small step opportunity to someone that could prefer this mini-format. I also have a few roundtables/panels to prepare, got some interest in "girls in tech" panel from a few potential participants... --SylvainCarle
