Sep 3, 2006 -- Location Finalized

I've been able to secure a great space for BarCampMontreal. We have a 2200 sq-ft loft fully equipped with WiFi, air-conditioning, speakers, wireless microphones, chairs and tables, etc. We'll need a few more things such as a Projector (anybody have one?), but those will all come in good time.

Actually, the space is being donated by Cat's Corner, which is a company that I founded. It's good to have resources available! The address is 486 St. Catherine W., Suite 303, at the corner of St. Catherine and Aylmer, near the downtown Future Shop.

As usual you can keep up with the planning efforts at the SiliconIsland Blog! Also, please take a look at the TODO list posted there and email me at barcampmontreal@gmail.com if you would be willing to take care of any of those items. Thanks! -- FredNgo

Aug 25, 2006 -- Organization has Begun

Hi everybody! Thank you for your interest in BarCampMontreal. With 24 pre-registrants as of today, I am now convinced that there is enough interest, so let's make it happen! I've set the date as Saturday, October 21st, 2006. This should give everybody enough time to prepare your demos and talks. I will know tomorrow if the location I have in mind will be available. In the meantime, if you have specific ways in which you'd like to help out, please drop me a note at barcampmontreal@gmail.com.

I've also started a blog in order to (among other things) coordinate and chronicle the organization of BarCampMontreal. Brief updates will continue to be posted here, but if you are interested in the nitty-gritty details of organizing, I invite you to check out http://siliconisland.wordpress.com! --FredNgo

Jun 20, 2006 -- The first edition of BarCampMontreal has arrived!

If you are interested in Web 2.0 technology, or high-tech entrepreneurship in general, you should definitely consider coming.

BarCamps have been a huge success, spreading to many cities since the inaugural BarCamp in Palo Alto (Fall 2005). In Canada, there are now BarCamps in Toronto, Vancouver, Ottawa, and even Halifax.

We (Fred Ngo and Jean-Jacques Taoko) have been inspired by the success that BarCamps in other cities (especially Toronto) have had in gathering together Web 2.0 and other high-tech entrepreneurs. We are hoping that this initiative will help bring some of these people out of the woodwork here in Montreal so that we can generate the critical mass to make SiliconIsland a reality!

So... Please add yourself to the list of interested persons! (Be sure to leave your contact info.) Register Today!

What is BarCamp

BarCamp is an ad-hoc gathering born from the desire for people to share and learn in an open environment. It is an intense event with discussions, demos, and interaction from attendees.

All attendees must give a demo, a session, or help with one. All presentions are scheduled the day they happen. Prepare in advance, but come early to get a slot on the wall.

Presenters are responsible for making sure that notes/slides/audio/video of their presentations are published on the web for the benefit of all and those who can’t be present.

Anyone with something to contribute or with the desire to learn is welcome and invited to join.

NO SPECTATORS, ONLY PARTICIPANTS!

When you come, be prepared to share with barcampers. When you leave, be prepared to share it with the world.

You can learn more about BarCamp in this Wired Magazine article. There is another nice article here.
