BarCamp NOLABarCamp NOLA - Feb 16-17, 2008

Let's get a bunch of Gulf Coast geeks together and build something for someone who needs our help.

Maybe it's time we do a BarCamp here in New Orleans. In addition to connecting digital folks, sharing what we know and what we're working on, maybe we can pick a team project to do as well.

I'd like to find a struggling small business we could help immediately with a new site or enhanced Web services. Spend a weekend cranking as a team and launch the thing at the end of the weekend. We can get help from our friends everywhere with regard to code, design, ideas. Brains, we have them at the ready.

Date: February 16th and 17th, 2008

Where: Voodoo Ventures offices, 757 St. Charles Avenue, Suite 301

Ideas:**

  • Marnie Webb (of NetSquared) has a NOLA non-profit in mind. Depending on how much interest we get, perhaps we can set up a few teams and do a few projects during the jam session. I think the first MashPit had like 12 people and produced 3 comp'd up Web services.
  • Maybe we get a bunch of vloggers and podcasters to go out on the Friday before the event and tell untold stories. Maybe an editing jam session that night. A showcase? Start Sat. off with some vids?
  • Like to emphasize how digital tools can advance our love of and industries creating music, visual art, food, story
  • one thing we might help with is Alan G's current project for Hollygrove:

I'm working in a specific neighborhood right now, Hollygrove. It's a compelling neighborhood, if people would take a look. We've established a block captain's program, a newsletter, we've produced Podcasts that we've distributed on CD. We're building out a contractor referral database. People in this neighborhood are coming back slowly. There was a lot of damage and many people are still waiting on Insurance and Road Home.

Our new project is to create a marketing strategy for Hollygrove. To attract people to return. Make this multi-media and that would be even better. Also, we have a lot of information that could go online and become a resource for the entire city.

Here is some more information on Hollygrove. I'll be posting some of the stories from this neighborhood on ThinkNOLA.com soon, but for now here is a photowalking expedition by myself and Christopher Johnston.
