FrontPage barcampOttawaGov The Event? A chance for Government of Canada employees to get together and talk about what they're doing with social media and new technologies. A chance to meet others in communications, marketing, web development, design (and any other job description) to find some inspiration, some motivation and help build a community.
It's a lot like the hugely successful event held over in the United Kingdom last month, and New Zealand before that. Ideas, demonstrations, crazy suggestions, projects already under way - and all on a schedule set up by the people who show up ready to participate.
Just take a look at all the people blogging about egovernment and government 2.0 already.
When? DATE CHOSEN - September 5, at the Code Factory.
How Long?
We think there's enough happening inside government departments to take up a whole day - in demos, discussions and Q&A sessions.
Will There Be Food? YES The Office of the Commissioner of Official Languages is sponsoring lunch for up to 40 people.
What Will It Cost?
The cost will be low. Very low. Like $10. That will pay for coffee and snacks.
Who Can Attend?
CHANGE After five or so discussions about participation (both online and
offline), I think we've arrived at a solution:
1) The September 5 session will be open to GofC employees and long term contractors who effectively work as part of a GofC team. This will give participants the chance to speak as frankly as they want and
to help establish a baseline of common understanding and awareness across all the departments and agencies participating.
2) At the second event ( to be scheduled, but likely this fall), it will be open to whomever wants to participate.
I don't mean to discriminate against consultants and agencies doing some very important work in social media, but I feel that there are some legitimate and fundamental questions about how social media may
affect the work and careers of civil servants. These have to be discussed.

Is There Limited Seating?
Yes. We figure we can find a space for 50 to 60 people. We already know about 20 that will attend, so make sure to add your name to the list of participants and sign up for the Google Groups mail list.
Can you Make A Presentation?
Add your name and presentation title here.
Ian Ketcheson - I'll figure out something to talk about. Maybe something on selling your ideas to senior management.
Kerry Colpitts - I could talk about how we got senior management on board at CRA, too, and some of the projects we're doing and looking at. We should be about to launch our YouTube contest when this starts, which is pretty interesting.
Anatole Papadopoulos - I could briefly cover (1) some of the challenges I've observed in efforts to roll out common Web 2.0 tools across the Public Service (2) work on GEDS 2.0 (the internal linkedin/facebook concept) and (3) the Web 2.0 experience with the Canada@150 project. I could also touch on the "wish list" topic below about generations, having worked on this in the renewal context at PCO.
Robin Browne - Working title: "Do before you advise - how to do a weekly podcast."

Is This An Official Event?
This is not an event put on by the Government of Canada. You can argue with your boss that this will be a highly effective low-cost training opportunity, and if you really need it we can make up a convincing yet completely untruthful conference pamphlet to help make the argument.
