BarCamp RDU

Date and Location: July 22, 2006 - Red Hat Offices, Raleigh, NC.

What's a BarCamp? Read this First!

A BarCamp is an unconference where people interested in a wide range of technologies come together to teach and learn. Unfamiliar with unconference? Here's the idea in a nutshell. Rather than having scheduled speakers, everyone pitches sessions the morning of the BarCamp. Those sessions are put on a schedule, and lots of little groups form for intense group learning. Everyone is expected to teach, to talk, to participate. Yeah, its different from a regular conference - but it works!

The idea of an unconference came together when people realized the best times they were having at conferences were the times between sessions - where people with like interests could meet ad hoc. The goal of BarCamp is to facilitate this type of interaction for an entire day. We supply the food, the space, the wireless, the projectors - you show up to teach and learn.

To make BarCamp successful, we need campers, space , and sponsors. We're working on the latter two - we just need you to sign up and come! Scroll down the wiki to learn more.

To-Date Sponsors

We Need Sponsors for the Following:

The basic sponsorship budget is $3000. This includes:

  • Food and refreshments ($1500, covering breakfast, lunch, coffee, drinks and snacks for the day. $10/head)
  • Whiteboards and paper-based communication devices ($300 for posterboard, writing utensils, stands, large sheets of paper, paper towels, badges, etc. $2/head)
  • T-shirts ($1200 bucks to get every Bar Camper a t-shirt with sponsor logos. $8/head)

Other sponsorship opportunities

Companies are welcome to sponsor bookend events on Friday and Saturday night. Please consider sponsoring:

  • Pre-BarCamp social event on the night of Friday, July 21. A company (or group of companies) is welcome to sponsor food and drinks at a Triangle-area location - perhaps a place like Tylers at the American Tobacco Campus.
  • Post-BarCamp dinner event in Raleigh. Same as above, a company (or companies) are welcome to host a post-BarCamp dinner event in Raleigh (somewhere convenient to the RedHat HQ is the best bet).

BarCamp is about conversation. These events give companies an excellent opportunity to extend the conversation of BarCamp.

Contact Fred Stutzman (fred @ metalab.unc.edu) to discuss sponsorship.

Additionally, we may need folks to bring:

  • 4-6 projectors (more the better)
  • A PA system

Other Fun BarCampRDU Things

Resume Swap

Let's face it - the job market is heating up again. Folks looking for new opportunities are welcome to bring copies of their resume for employers to peruse. A resume swap works like this:

  • You bring ten paper copies of your resume
  • We put them in a folder
  • If employers like what they see, they take a copy and email you

Pretty brainless. So start polishing up your resume.

Sonic Pleasure

Musicians, bring out your fun or cool or weird instruments. Meet. Jam together. Collaborate.
