News

  • 5/01/07: We have an attendance cap! Based on sponsorship and available space, we are aiming to have 50 participants at the BarCamp. Please ensure that *you are on the wiki with and email address* if you plan to come, it will be the basis for the authoritative attendance list. Click the Edit button at the top of this page to do so - the password is c4mp. Your email address is crucial, as I will be emaililng folks in the days before the event to coordinate and confirm participation. If you'd rather not put your address here, email me at jason dot p dot morrison at gmail dot com. If you have any problems editing the wiki, email me. If there are already 50 people on the list, please sign up anyhow, in case other folks are unable to attend. Also, start thinking about those session topics! :) I can't wait to see this take off!

P.S.: Let me know your t-shirt size somehow, be it on the wiki, or via email. For the unspecified shirts, we'll try and get a spread of sizes, but can't guarantee a good fit. We can do ladies tees. See http://www.htbkicksass.com for more info - they are our sweet t-shirt hookup! Thanks!

P.P.S: Heck yeah you heard right, we'll have video coverage for at least one session per block. That means everyone who can't join us in person can later relive some of the BarCampRochester2 excellence through the web!

  • 4/21/07: We have a confirmed date & time! 70-2400, 2455, and 2590 are reserved all day on May 12. Also, we are swiftly approaching having a full suite of sponsors. BarCampRochester2 looks good to go -- so tell all your friends!

  • 4/17/07: The idea of bringing a loose organization to the sessions through common themes has come up. Two such themes that have come up repeatedly are (1) Innovation and Entrepreneurship, and (2) Digital Content/Design. Would folks like to banner the entire BarCamp under one such theme? Form "tracks" within the un-conference? While I strongly value the ad-hoc nature of a BarCamp, I think that a little organization may help go a long way in forming expectations, giving context, and setting the tone, all in the name of getting higher quality conversations and interactions :) Feedback, please! -Jason

What is BarCamp?

In the spirit of FooCamp, BarCamp is an ad-hoc gathering born from the desire for people to share and learn in an open environment. It is an intense event with discussions, demos, and interaction from attendees.

All attendees must give a demo, a session, or help with one. All presentations are scheduled the day they happen. Prepare in advance, but come early to get a slot on the wall.

Presenters are responsible for making sure that notes/slides/audio/video of their presentations are published on the web for the benefit of all and those who can't be present.

Anyone with something to contribute or with the desire to learn is welcome and invited to join.

NO SPECTATORS, ONLY PARTICIPANTS!

When you come, be prepared to share with barcampers. When you leave, be prepared to share it with the world.

You can learn more about BarCamp in this Wired Magazine article. There is another nice article here. Take a look at video summaries from BarCamp SF and BarCamp Austin.

Who

This is a multi-disciplinary event... meaning that we want designers, developers, marketers, engineers, artists, thinkers and reality-checkers... no more bubbles -- we want cross-pollination! If you want in, like technology, to build things or asking good questions, you should come!

IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN BEING A CAMPER OR HOST: Edit the wiki to add yourself and/or contact Jason Morrison :)

What

Trouble getting an idea of what your session's about? No problem! Talk about whatever fires you up - whatever you'd like to see happen - what big questions do you want answers to - what do you want to find out from your peers?

Check out Scott Berkun's How to run a great unconference session.

Ideas for Topics

  • What's the significance of "local" when we all work online?
  • Innovation, Invention, Entrepreneurship
  • Designer/Developer speed-"dating"? :) (not necessarily to matchup on a project (though this may, well and good, be some folks' aim), but just to get a feel for the skills different folks bring to the table in the area.)
  • New interfaces
    • FTIR
    • Multitouch gesture recognition and interface design
    • Wiimote interface hacking
  • OpenID
  • Rochester startups/startups in general
  • Blogging
  • Illegal File Sharing, Tor, Onion Routing
  • JavaScript Libraries
  • Network Neutrality
  • RSS, Semantic Web, REST
  • Language Geekery, Tools, and Web Frameworks
    • Ruby, Rails, Camping
    • Python, its multitude of web frameworks
    • Smalltalk, Seaside
    • Type Inference, IDEs (Software Development Tools seminar course in RIT CS)
    • Apollo, Slingshot, Silverlight: the convergence of web and desktop apps
  • Social Networks
    • Generally (MySpace, Facebook)
    • Mining data (there is a research project for rumor tracking on social networks in the RIT Math department, will be present)
  • Usability Testing
    • Eye Tracking
  • VOIP
  • War Driving
  • Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0
  • Wikis
  • Any projects that people are working on...

Mash Pit

  • How about a Mini-Mash Pit (8hour?), or a Mash Pit room?
  • This would be a great way to spur co-op code sessions, hackfests, etc., under one memeroof

Games

-I'll strongly considering taking charge of this if there is any interest. Start a tiny little table on here or leave me a message in my email so I know if people would want to participate in this or not. -Patrick

    • I'd be up for it! Not sure if many folks will see this, below the fold and all, but I'm sure more would like to. -Jason

Chillaxing

  • Maybe during dinner, have old-skool video games on the projectors, or something?
  • Can we track down some bean bags?
