Update (The day after)

BarCampSaskatoon has come to an end. About 50 people attended and, it was so succesful, that there are plans in place to hold BarCampSaskatoon2 in the spring of 2007. If you didn't make it and want to see more about what happened, check out the BarCampSaskatoon blog. There, you will find blogs, videos and photos from BarCampSaskatoon. There are still some things to post there, so check back later today and later on Monday.

Previous updates

There is a wireless connection available at the venue, so no need for hubs, switches or ports. If you have a powerbar, maybe you could bring one so that more people can charge their batteries.

There is still time to sign up or show up, so come on down.

Check out the BarCampSaskatoon blog on Saturday for live updates from the venue.

Just to clear up some confusion... you do not have to speak at this conference, but you should be willing to particiapte in the discussions (if you know something about what is being talked about or if you have questions). You can also volunteer.

Read this article about BarCamps from Wired magazine.

Here is some video describing BarCampLA.

What is BarCamp ?

The idea of BarCamp came from Foo Camp where a bunch of the best techie minds in the world got together to talk about new technologies, and to create opportunities for cross-fertilization between people and technologies.

Since only the top minds from some of the largest companies in the world were invited to attend, two people in California decided to make a Camp for the rest of us. Now, there are BarCamps somewhere in the world almost every day.

The goal of BarCampSaskatoon, is to bring together, for an afternoon, people who love technology to talk and to learn. Each person who attends has to be willing to talk about something or volunteer (registration, set-up, teardown, etc.). There will be a number of sessions which will be picked by the attendees at the start of the day. For example, if lots of people want to hear about the future of Skype, then that will be on the agenda. If people do not want to hear about the effect use of the “blink” tag, it will not be on the agenda.

Space is limited to about 70 people so sign up below right now.

Each attendee should bring whatever gadget they have: laptop, cell phone, blackberry, camera, laser pointer, whatever.

When and Where is it on ?

BarCampSaskatoon will take place on Saturday, October 28, 2006 at The Cellar. The Cellar is an ultra-hip conference room in the basement of the Senator Hotel (243 21st Street East). There are two small conference rooms (one holds about 35 people and one about 25 people), a learning lounge, the pool table room and a “beverage station.” If you haven’t been to The Cellar, you will be really surprised at how cool it is. Internet access is available. We will need a few wireless routers. Screens and projectors have been donated.

BarCamp Ideas - What folks want to hear about or talk about.

Barcamp is a conference with a difference.

At Barcamp, anyone can present. In fact, presenting is actively encouraged. Talks can be as short or as long as you like. You can use Powerpoint slides, a web connection, or forego slides altogether. Talks can be technical or non-technical.

The Barcamp ethos is about sharing information. There is no overriding theme to the conference. If you would like to talk at Barcamp you can either sign-up beforehand or sign-up on the day.

Talk:

  1. Ginger Koolick - Web standards, let's talk about it.
  2. Ryan Lejbak - Talk, Mobile devices (cell phones, Blackberry, PDAs) are the fastest growing segment in interactive media. The skills you have developed to create websites are easily transferable to mobi. I will talk about the state of the mobile industry and discuss how you can become a leader in the field without having to learn any new tools or spend any more money.
  3. Francis Chary - Talk, We're going to check out Open Source Flash. Mainly for developers, although designers can probably learn a thing or two about how Flash is REALLY done ;-) Don't forget about OpenLaszlo! - ''I don't know so much about it, but I'll give it a shot. Maybe we can have a discussion about that, and Flex 2!
  4. David Francis - Talk, I have spent a grueling year finishing a M.Ed. thesis on how Instructional Designers conceptualize digital learning objects. My sexy results will be shared for all.
  5. Heather M. Ross - Talk, I'm going to talk about education and training at a distance for all those who don't actually live in one of the two big cities in this vast province.
  6. Allan Dowdeswell - Talk, I'm going to talk about Joomla!, the open-source content management system and do an installation and customization demo.
  7. Albert Jame and Ginger Koolick, Talk, this is an interactive session to discuss the direction of the Internet. Considering Google, blogs, MySpace, Flickr and YouTube, what else is out there and where are we going.
  8. Mike Lavender - Talk, I'll tell you what I know about DotNetNuke, another open-source content management system based on Microsoft's .NET. I'll cover setup and basic usage and share my experience with developing custom modules.
  9. Jennifer Pearcey - Mike... Maybe I could take a few minutes and talk about Saskatoon's .NET user group at the end of your session?
  10. Greg Sutton - Talk, Someone asked about getting some grants for developing software. I can speak to this and tell you all about how to get assistance for the next great idea.
  11. Grace Stad (TeleFilm) - If there is a call for it I would be happy to do a presentation on TeleFilm's New Media Fund or alternatively, an informal Q&A. I will be available to meet with people individually throughout the day.
  12. Brad Sweeney and Ryan Lejbak - Talk, We are going to talk about "Everythingcasting". Blogs, vlogs, podcasts vpodcasts. Some of the best ones, what works and what doesn't work. We will show samples and even put one together from start to finish. Lots of time for questions and answers.
  13. Mike Lavender - I would love to talk about data backup! Is anyone interested in the fame, fortune and Google Page Rank that goes along with well written Open Source applications? I have been thinking about developing a data backup application and am looking for ideas/input. An Open Source model is looking very appealing to me. Does anyone have any experience in the Open Source environment? This doesn't need to be a talk but more of a conversation.
  14. Chelsea Fleischhacker and Katherine Sopotyk - Pick and Pitch - one of the big things at BarCamps now is to come up with new ideas. To do this, we will do a session where we split into teams and come up with Web 3.0 ideas for 15 minutes (this was first done in New York a few weeks ago and the idea is spreading like foo). Then, we will all pitch them to the other teams. Maybe one of these ideas will be the next YouTube.

Anyone fancy a wee tipple afterwards? If so, we can meet at Winstons.
