Call to Participate:

The first BarCamp is being held in Australia this year! BarCamps, those crazy unconferences, will be held in states across Australia at the same time on the 3rd and 4th of March. BarCampSydney is calling you!

NO SPECTATORS, ONLY PARTICIPANTS

When you come, be prepared to share with BarCampers.

When you leave, be prepared to share it with the world.

BarCamp is an ad-hoc unconference born from the desire for people to share and learn in an open environment.

It is an intense event with discussions, demos and interaction from attendees.

Anyone with something to contribute or with the desire to learn is welcome and invited to participate.

What's Next?

Sign up on the wiki, check out the blog, tell all your friends, prepare your presentation, ask your company if they're interested in sponsoring...

First Email to Presenters:

Welcome BarCampSydneyers! Great to see you've signed up. If you haven't seen, we've got the venue booked: University of Technology, Sydney (near Central Station) and started a blog at www.barcampsydney.org. We'll keep both the wiki and blog updated with news (which you can too!). BarCamp is all about everyone doing stuff, so here are some things that are on top of the list:

1) Publicise: Here is the Call to Participate you can pass onto mates;

2) Get Sponsorship: We need sponsors to help pay for the venue. All the sponsors will get heaps of publicity from us (emails, wikis, blogs, podcasts etc) and from the coverage about the first Australian BarCamp in general. So refer a sponsor (or become one) to the wiki for more info.

3) Any graphic artists who can tweak the BarCamp logo? There is a template at the wiki.

4) Any ideas for places people can stay if they need to crash the night (don't put your personal details on the wiki -- just cheap venues)?

Anyway, we're really excited at this first Australian BarCamp and especially BarCampSydney. See you on the web and there!

Penultimate Email to Presenters:

Hey ho BarCampSydneyers!

It is nearly time to meetup at the first BarCamp in Australia! Here are some important details:

When: Saturday March 3rd, 2007

Time: 9am turn-up, 4.30 go to pub

Venue: Building 10 of the University of Technology, Sydney (near Central Station). Jones St between Thomas and Broadway We don't have the 'camp' part of BarCamp this year.

What to do on the day: you can present using a dataproject, your hands or a sea shell; get a panel happening; have a heated debate; demo something; confess something...anything goes...as long as you're not a spectator.

Tech: Each room will have a Net enabled computer and data projector. We'll also have wireless (supplied by the ace UnWired) and a computer lab.

T-Shirt: Free stuff is always good. Not only do you get this free unconference, but our sponsors have paid for a few t-shirts to give out. If you put your name on the wiki singup page, and you're one of the first 100 to turn up, you'll get a free BarCampSydney t-shirt! Wohoo! We'll pop the design online shortly after, however, so those that miss out can still get one.

Saturday Night: Still looking for a place to go that is near UTS. Any ideas? Our ace sponsors may put in a tab...

Pre- and Post-Event Conversation: Tangler has offered their community software for us to get up close and personal with each other. Go to: www.Tangler.com and sign up and we'll get the conversation about code, design, marketing, ideas etc on!

Ace Sponsors: Atlassian, ThoughtWorks, Tangler, Microsoft, UnWired.

Anyway, we're really excited at this first Australian BarCamp and especially BarCampSydney. See you on the web and there!

First Response to Ace Sponsors:

We're thrilled you've registered to be a sponsor for BarCampSydney. We'd love to have you on board for this inaugural Australian BarCamp. Here are some ace things we thought that your sponsorship could achieve:

1) Target self-motivated, interested and technically-adept people (we envisage the following: web media and communication people, web designers and developers, usability specialists, information architects, project managers and many more);

2) Exposure through our email notices (just the small group of organisers alone will reach about 3,000 people);

3) Exposure through our wiki & blog (all emails refer to these pages and we'll have lots of posting during and after the event);

4) At the event (we don't mind putting up a poster or something, but at the very least we'll be giving you a verbal thanks, and a hug if you want it!);

5) Maybe you'll get mentioned in podcasts of the event;

6) Community karma (there is nothing like community karma to add to a companies credibility within the industry. A great opportunity to pick up potential clients as well as impressing existing clients. Not that you need help impressing them! hehe)

So, if you're thinking "gee that sounds good" then we should tell you what we need. Not much actually. We've kept the costs way down. We've attached a spreadsheet which shows the booked quotes we have and the various scaling of fees according to how many register to present. Have a look and then throw us an email to let us know. We'd be happy to talk further via phone/Skype if you prefer. Any questions? Check back at the wiki and blog for updates or ping us.

Cheers, BarCampSydney organisers Christy, Russ, Jason and Mick.

General Info for Potential Sponsors:

About the event

-------------------------------------

As you probably know, BarCamp events are an ad-hoc gathering born from the desire for people to share and learn in an open environment - an intense event with discussions, demos, and interaction from participants.

Two of the best aspects about BarCamp are that everyone must participate (attendees must give a demo, a session, or help with one, or otherwise volunteer / contribute in some way) and all presentations are scheduled the day they happen. This makes for a lively and exciting event.

There have already been a range of very successful BarCamp events in a wide range of countries, as can be seen here: http://barcamp.org/PreviousBarCamps

Our aim is to hold the Sydney BarCamp at the University of Technology, Sydney. We have no idea of actual numbers at this stage but it could be anywhere from 40 to over 100 people. Based on recent Sydney web-related events, it is easy to imagine numbers could be high.

Costs involved

-------------------------------------

Attached is a spreadsheet with budgets for the Sydney BarCamp with options depending on the number of attendees. As you can see, the coasts have been kept to absolute basics.

What could be in it for you

-------------------------------------

Benefits for any sponsor include:

1. Email exposure

Between these different groups we believe we have around 3000 people we will be mailing out to. This email campaign alone means that a large percentage of web developers, designers, managers, user specialist et are all exposed to the sponsors name.

2. Exposure to a wide community

This event will involve a wide range of communities from various aspects of the web including web media and communication people, web designers and developers, usability specialists, information architects, project managers and many more.

3. Wiki and blog exposure

The sponsors name will appear on the wiki as well as the Sydney blog (http://www.barcampsydney.org/). These web addresses will be sent out with all mail outs and will be heavily hit during the lead-up to the event.

4. At the event

The sponsor would be acknowledged and thanked at the event.

5. Community karma

There is nothing like community karma to add to a companies credibility within the industry. A great opportunity to pick up potential clients as well as impressing existing clients.

We are happy to discuss this further if you need further information.
