Camp Fandom 2.0

The Business of Expressive Entertainment

Event details

When: March 20, March 21, 2009

Where: Illinois Institute of Technology, McCormick Tribune Campus Center

About

Camp Fandom 2.0 designed to unite the community of fannish creatives in Chicago (and beyond!): the fanboys, fangurls, writers, artists, web designers, archivists, historians, larpers, cyberpunks, furries...

Camp Fandom 2.0 is a barcamp so whoever shows up to determines what gets presented. General ideas on topics of interest should be focused on the web, social media, on-line activities, computers, gaming, mobile phones, vidding, writing, or going professional as they pertain to entertainment or fandom. Camp Fandom 2.0 is about the back end of fandom and the entertainment community, and the support structures that go into being a fan.

Camp Fandom 2.0 is for fans, fan fiction writers, fan vidders, fan website maintainers, entertainment companies, convention dealers, convention runners, gamers, bloggers, professional authors, new media artists, fan artists, or people who have some investment in movie, television, music or speculative fiction fan communities.  The topics are should be geared around the business side of fandom and the processes supporting fan-centered online communities.

Focus

  •  finding volunteers/employees to help with fandom sites, projects, conventions, startups and businesses;
  •  networking with other startups/businesses operating in fanspace, fandom wikis, fandom communities, fansite maintainers, fandom-based projects, dealers at conventions;
  •  demo sessions for new fansites, business, video games, startups in fanspaces, entertainment or of interest to fans;
  •  sessions on special issues that people running on-line sites such as fandom-specific wikis, directories, fan fiction archives, review sites, dating services have to deal with;
  •  sessions about applying the lessons of web 2.0 such as SEO and utilizing social bookmarking sites to fandom activity;
  •  sessions for fans who have gone professional with their writing, art, music, fansites and special issues that they have;
  •  sessions on financial, legal, programming/coding, marketing, social aspects that people in fandom have to deal with; and
  •  sessions on issues and trends in fandom.
