FloatCamp

What Is A FloatCamp?

FloatCamp is an event being organize by the Will This Float? group in an attempt to bring entrepreneurs with bright ideas in contact with those who can help get move those ideas into business.  There will be some pre-scheduled sessions divided into 3 main groups: Technology, Business Philosphy, & Medical.

As part of the first FloatCamp will also be the first BarCamp in the Tri-Cities region.  In addition to all the planned sessions for FloatCamp there will be plenty of space and session time for you to share your knowledge as part of the first ever BarCampTriCities.  We are hoping for all kinds of awesome and interactive sessions about a vast array of topics.

So what will BarCamp be about?  The web, the arts, music, dance, film, photography, cooking, wine, design, gaming, healthcare... BarCamp, in short, will be about whatever you make it about.  See the "Proposed Sessions" section below to add a Session if there is something you'd like to talk about.  Or add something to the "Sessions You Would Like To See" section if there is something you'd love to learn more about.  Who knows... maybe someone will pick up and proposed a session on it!

Remember that at a BarCamp there are no such thing as spectators.  Give a session talk, demo some neat software or programming language you are working with, show us how to make beer, or just Volunteer to help man the doors or setup equipment.  Every bit helps!

Be sure to browse around the whole BarCamp website and look at BarCamps that have happened in other towns to get more ideas, etc...

Proposed BarCamp Sessions

Do you have an idea for a session you'd like to present at the first ever Tri-Cities BarCamp?  Add a description of the session, your name, and some contact info below.  Specifics about the location, space, time, etc... are being worked out so hopefully we will be able to accomodate everyone who wants to present.  This section is NOT for ideas regarding sessions you would like to see.  See below to add your ideas for sessions you'd like to see.  Also, in keeping with the Rules of BarCamp we ask that you not propose a session that is a pitch for your company or your company's products.  If there is enough interest from people for this, we may try to setup a Company/Product demontration section of the BarCamp.

  • Nothing yet... be the first!

Sessions You Would Like To See

  • iPhone Development - Any local iPhone developers want to give us a quick run through?  Show us the tools, give us some hints?
    • Added by Austin on 12/31/08
    • Eric/Jose I think know the local guy who did the Advent calendar.  Maybe he'd be interested?
  • Co-Working - What is it and why is it the most awesome thing ever?
    • Added by Austin on 12/31/08
    • Lance Ball in Asheville may have his co-working space Locomotivity open by the time BarCamp happens.  Maybe we could get him to make the trip over the mountain to give us the lowdown on what it took to get it going.
  • What is a business plan and why do you need one? - So far with Will This Float? we have been concerned with ideas before they grow into the space where a business plan is needed.  But a lot of us have no idea really what a business plan is, what it looks like, how do you start to create one, etc...  Maybe a quick session by someone in the know.
    • Added by Austin 12/31/08
  • Speed Networking - We had a session of this at the HYPE event in downtown Johnson City in 2008 and it was awesome.  Get everyone in a room and make them talk to someone they don't know for 30 seconds or a minute or whatever.  Then switch...  It was a great way to get to know everyone.
    • Added by Austin 12/31/08
  • Smart Car (the big and the small) - I know that most everyone else has seen one of these rolling around Johnson City.  Anyone know who it is?  Would they be interested in bringing it to the BarCamp for everyone to look at?  Give a quick talks on the ups and downs of driving that cute little thing in and around all these big cars we have in this area.
    • Added by Austin 12/31/08
  • A Deaf Guy's Perspective Of Technology - Louis twittered last night that he'd love to come to the BarCamp if we could get some interpreters lined up.  Heck yeah!  We'll see what we can do (actually see the ToDo section above).  However, I'd like to see if maybe Louis could do a session describing how he navigates this wild wooly technology we all live in.  What are things about the web, mobile phones, etc... that I take for granted that he has to find other ways to work around?
