Background

 

10 million Internet users in Nigeria, highest in Africa. That's 10% of population.

 

1 out of 4 black Africans are Nigerian. 1 out of 5 black population in world are Nigerians.

 

Primary language on the Internet is pidgin English (which is the national language). Most schools will not teach in native languages. Lot of slang. If you're in Nigeria and you're not speaking English, you probably don't have access to the Internet.

 

Nigerian use Yahoo! a lot.

 

Diaspora: 10 million Nigerians living outside of Nigeria. Generally a wealthier population.

 

Lots of NGOs in Nigeria.

 

Obstacles

 

  • Power outages
  • Low appreciation for the Web
  • Fraud
  • Poor e-commerce options

 

No online advertising infrastructure, which eliminates one monetization model.

 

Need to be doing analytics.

 

Credit cards are a new thing, but banks are starting to offer them.

 

Lack of shipping infrastructure. Less than 5% of population use those services.

 

Opportunities

 

Nigeria can become Africa's "Russia" or "India" when it comes to the Internet.
