SocialDevCamp Hackathon 2009

Bring your laptops and development tools this year! One of the exciting new features of this year's SocialDevCamp is the Hack-a-thon contest. During this 2-day event, developers work alone or in teams to build social media-related applications, present their applications to the attendees, and compete for prizes in several categories. There is a set deadline for submission, and following the presentations, the judges votes are tallied and the prizes awarded.

Schedule

  • In the days leading up to the event — This is a good time to start sharing your ideas, choose your project, and begin to find your team. In the next few weeks we will have a tool that allows developers to tag their skills and interests and connect with potential teammates.
  • Saturday
    • 10 -10:45 Hackathon Registration - Depending on the number of day-of registrations, we can't guarantee that there will be time to sign up that day. Please plan ahead and complete the registration form on this page.
    • Hackathon Introduction -After the keynote, we will cover the rules and provide the criteria for the Guerilla coders competition. Teams will also be given the oppotunity to recruit others to help with their projects. Everyone's participation is valued, even those without significant programming skills, as almost every team will need design and testing help.
    • Saturday through Sunday mid-day — Teams are building their applications. If you're not having fun then you're doing it wrong.
  • Sunday
    • 2:30 - Entry Deadline Coding is complete. All entries for the Hackathon Show must be submitted to judges.
    • 3:00 - The Hackathon Presentations Demos should be around 3-5 minutes, so practice your presentation before you get to the podium. We will have a projector available.
    • 4:00 - Break. Hackathon Judging
    • 4:30 - Prize Awards — Categories below.

Prize Categories

  • Best Overall
  • Best Open Source
  • Best Student Submission
  • Best Design
  • People's Choice
  • Best Mobile App
  • Best Sharer/Helper - This prize goes to the person that demonstrates the most community spirit by helping other teams with testing or providing some much needed expertise.
  • Guerilla Coders - This prize requires that the application be built with a specific set of APIs and criteria, to be determined by the judges and made available the morning of the event.

As the event draws nearer, these categories will be further refined.

Prize Categories

We are still putting together the award packages, but you can expect:

  • Netbooks
  • Google Android Phones
  • iPhones
  • iPod Touches
  • Gift Cards
  • and much much more!!!

Rules

  • All Hackathon participants MUST be registered for SocialDevCamp Chicago.
  • All Hackathon applications must be registered for the Hackathon itself, with at least one primary contact listed. Hackathon registration will open the week of 10/25/2009.
  • Applications can be under development prior to the event, but:
    • Applications cannot be already available to the public
    • A significant degree of development must occur at the event

The idea and spirit of the contest is to get people to engage and work together at the event.

  • The development tools, frameworks or application focus is entirely up to the participants, with the exception of the Guerilla Coder category.
  • Participants are expected to bring all the tools and software they will need to build their entry. The organizers will try to provide enough power strips, but you might bring your own to be on the safe side.

FAQ

is there someone I can contact to get more information?

Yes, send at email to the Hackathon Chairperson, Peter Morano at peter (@) petermorano (dot ) com

Do I have to be on a team to participate?

No, you can go it alone, but where's the fun in that?

If I didn't sign up for the Hackathon, can I join one of the teams during the event?

Yes, Hackathon registration is required at the application level with one primary contact designated. Participants need only be registered for SocialDevCamp.

I would like to form a team, but don't know anyone else at the camp. Will you help people connect?

Yes! There are several ways to find like-minded coders, and you will be given the opportunity to recruit team members at the Hackathon kickoff. There will also be a Hackathon contest table where you can post your needs or interests and connect with others.

Can we start the application prior to the event?

Yes, but see the rules section above.

Does everyone get to see the source code for the killer app we are going to build?

No, the developer(s) can share as much about the application as they wish.

What if the application ends up changing the world?

Just remember the camp organizers and Hackathon judges in your Nobel Peace Prize speech.
