I was trying to figure out another cool thing to do for a WordCamp, and thought having one up in Whistler, BC, Canada would be rather awesome. Whistler is one of North America's nicest ski resorts, and is only 100kms away from Vancouver. For now this website will be used to help with some of the planning aspects. The tentative date for this event is January 24, 2009, with the expectation that at least some people will go up to Whistler for the entire weekend.

Also, we're probably going to combine WordCamp with a PhotoCamp as well. I think the nature of the event will be a four hour block in the morning for WordCamp, followed by lunch, then a two hour block for PhotoCamp. Afterwards I imagine there will be a photo walk around Whistler.

    • Potential Venues **

We're investigating several options for venues and group hotel rooms. The following are some quotes we've received and what-not. We're looking for a few sponsors to help pick up some of these costs, otherwise we'll be forced to charge everyone a small amount to cover the expenses. We're hoping to have several options for people, as well as a few budget options for hotels if we can.

  • Pan Pacific In The Village (already contacted by Duane)
  • We will *try* to get a group rate or block or rooms for people to book at the venue
  • Fairmont Chateau Whistler (five star) - Conference room for about 100 people, minimum 10 guest rooms for the booking, about $1000 for the conference space, group rate of $269/room for guests. Internet still unknown.

    • Projected Timeline

  • Friday will be arrival and dinner
  • Saturday will be the conference/sessions, and an evening social. Probable timeline: WordCamp 9am - 1pm, Lunch 1pm - 2pm, PhotoCamp: 2pm - 4pm. PhotoWalk: 4pm - 6pm.
  • Sunday will be open for riding, exploring, and travel home

    • Sponsors

We're trying to keep this conference fairly grass-roots so it's simple to pull off. That being said, there will be some expenses associated with the conference facilities and what not. If any companies or organizations can help out, please contact duanestorey@gmail.com. We'll announce anyone that helps out at the event, and also will try to give some blog coverage to the same companies.

    • Travel Information

  • Nearest International Airport: Vancouver International (YVR)
  • Distance from airport to Whistler: approximately 100kms, or a 1.5 hour drive
  • We will try to organize some form of mass-transport ie. limobus or shuttle
